New equipment for the police
National Police Chief Major General Manuel Castro Castillo confirmed yesterday, Monday 14 October that the country was now a drug-producing nation. He described it as "the biggest drug warehouse in the Caribbean," adding that it is now more than just a transshipment point for drug smuggling.
He said that more than 75% of crimes in the county were drug-related, combined with a high level of violence that was leading to deaths amongst drug users,
He was speaking during an event where French Ambassador Blandine Kreiss handed over computers, scanners, video cameras and other equipment worth RD$1.8 million on behalf of the French government to the Central Anti Narcotics Department (DICAN) to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking. They also received a donation of a digital fingerprinting system called Biotrack, an intranet communication system and a restricted Internet telephone system for DICAN. The French government also donated two high-capacity servers, 36 new computers, 18 printers, 42 UPS units, and a video surveillance system for the department, along with other equipment.
The handover took place at the DICAN Head Office in Santo Domingo, attended by members of the French Embassy and Police Officers.

Drugs found in plane toilet
The National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) has discovered two packets weighing 2.4 kilograms and containing a white powder thought to be cocaine or heroin in the bathroom of an Air Canada airplane at Punta Cana International Airport.
The drugs were discovered after the pilot reported that a member of the cleaning staff had spent too long in the bathroom. A search by security agents uncovered the stored packages of drugs.
