We are a couple that likes to explore, snorkel a little but not dive, can?t seat at the beach more than a couple of hours, likes natural pools, rivers, hot springs, history, folkloric spectacles, meeting the locals, rafting (even though I recently got a problem with my tendons due to Levaquin poisoning, like to pass the word around ?don?t take it?), walking, but can?t hike much anymore, short ocean excursions (I get seasick), good food, decent accommodations. Middle of the road budget, but can splurge on occasion.

Arrive in Santo Domingo stay 3 days as I am interested in the history of the ?discovery? of America. Hotel Palacio. Is there a Sunday Market in front on of the Sofitel?

Day 4 Take a bus or guagua what is best? To La Romana or Bayahibe? Visit National Park of the East? Paque ecologico Punta Cana ?Ojos Indigenas? Snorkel? Cap Cana Hoyo Azul? Stay 2 or 3 days? What else is around?

Day 7 Take a bus or a Guagua? To Las Galeras or Las Terrenas? Visit Parque Nacional Los Haitises , El Limon, Rio San Juan (I circle it but now I can?t find out why). Stay 3 days?

Day 10 take a bus or Guagua? To Puerto Plata Stay 2 days. I know the old town is nice but is there anything else to do or see around. Stay 2 days or skip? Go to Santiago instead?

Day 12 Take a bus or Guagua to Jarabacoa. Visit the Saltos and go Rafting one day (is there enough water in November? Stay at the Rancho Baguate. Visit La Vega and Constanza? Go back to Santo Domingo airport.

Thanks in advance with any and all advice.

I would skip Puerto Plata - not much to see or do once you've been up the cable car and visited the Brugal factory if you're into rum. And I wouldn't plan on travelling too far by guagua as they can be very crowded. I think you might be better to spend more time in Jarabacoa/Constanza area.

"Puerto Plata", being a "Colonial" city has some historical sites to visit.
There are a lot of center city restaurants.
LOTs of "Day Tours", like "Diving", Jungle Tours", 4 wheeling, casinos, deep sea fishing,Bars, night clubs, etc.
I enjoy myself when ever I go there.
It was the first vacation spot I ever visited in the DR,over 26 years ago.

During first 3 days in SD make sure you visit El Faro (light house) de Colon, opened in 1992 to commemorate the 500th year anniversary (quincentenario) of Christopher Columbus' 1492 voyage.

Bayahibe stay
: Isla Saona trip. If you go on a small motor boat you'll pass alongside El Parque and if you swim, the water is crystal and shallow enough that you can ask the captain to stop while you wade in (you have to be fit enough to be able to climb back into the boat with minimal help from those on board). If your lucky, once you get to the island you can find a beach all to yourself.

Las Terrenas stay: El Portillo, Samana and Samana Bay (don't know if the whales are running). If you have the werewithal there is a semiprivate beach at the tip of the peninsula where the Caribbean meets the Atlantic. The beach is wading level for a distance, crystal and clean. Worth a look see.

Oh, and of course, El Salto de Limon. If they are still there, you will be met by an English speaking family descendant of Philadelphia slaves.

Santo domingo seems like the hotel your staying is in Zona Colonial. Theres plenty things to do for sunday there. Many old churchs there if you like to watch alot of pigeons theres a park infront of hard rock cafe which is in zona colonial also, there a mini coca-cola train that gives u a ride around that area, also go to Las Atarazanas great place.

I say renting a car is the best but then u need to mess with the gps and stuff i dont recommend following directions signs from this country it sucks. i guess take the guagua go to Bayahibe which have really nice beach, this place is for beach only and if you want you can take a boat to Isla Saona from there its expensive if you going in couple if you go in group they charge cheaper.. La romana theres NOTHING to do. and visiting punta cana is a must go both ojos indigenas and hoyo azul.

las galeras and terrenas all beachs also nothing much..

puerto plata and santiago theres NOthing to do. well if you go to santiago go to the CAMP DAVID which is a restaurant on a moutain and you can see entire santiago up there.. price from the restaurant are like $10-20 USD big plate

go to rancho baiguate!

i dont know what u mean by bus or guagua is the same.. there are 2 big express bus companys in here. Caribe tours and Metro

hope this helps

Agreed that POP isn't worth going to for more than an hour or so. It's dirty and at rush hour the air is full of blue smoke from poorly maintained motos. IF the cable car is running, it's a nice little trip but the cable car is more for transport than for the view.

Constanza is on my list for my next trip...

What I liked most. La Laguna Gri-Gri in Rio San Juan, the beach in Las Terrenas, particularly at dawn and sunset, Altos de Chavon near Casa del Campo, Juan Dolio, and the drive along the coast from Barahona to Los Patos. San Rafael was a nice beach, too. Any drive along the coast is beautiful, except around the SDQ Airport. Jarabacoa and Constanza are very beautiful at least from the photos I have seen. I suggest a guidebook, like the Rough Guide to the DR, among others. And, of course, this website. It is a small country, but you could spend a year traveling in it and still not see it all.
