I just heard from a friend that the Hotel Santo Domingo is closing at the end of December.

It could be true - if you try to reserve a room in 2014 it doesn't allow you to even see a calendar.
It "reminded" me of what I have read the Trujillo years may have been like in Santo Domingo Quiet understated elegance and if you wanted craziness it's sister was right across the street
I thought it was owned by La Romana Corporation.
Oh well, I never hardly ever stay a night in town....
I have stayed there several times, my son's wedding reception was there, I escorted Fr. Ted (from Notre Dame) for a weekend during his Honoris Causa party.
Hispaniola was the hotel of the Peace Corps back in the 60s, the pool was our oasis..

Also Hotel Jaragua will be clousing to make a remodelation, Hotel V Centenario now is Crown Plaza and finished the remodelation, they will build a new Intercontinental Hotel next to Acropolis, in Blue Mall will be JW Marriot, Melia also is in the process of remodelation to become Sheraton 360 and so on, Silver Sun Galery is also almost finishing a brand new Hotel, do not remember the name, so maybe they will be closing to make remodelations like every body else.

The hotel is closing in December.
It has been on the market for some time. If someone buys it they will probably have to renovate since much of the physical plant such as plumbing is badly outdated.

What the ..... Do you think SD actually need fancy hotels right front of poor neighbours nearby? I think SD need more lot of improvements rather than more hotels, IHMO
An awful lot of people who live in those neighborhoods who work at these hotels are going to find themselves unemployed. That is in no way a good thing for the city.
We've stayed there a lot - that damned helipad is a NUISANCE!! I always asked for a room away from there.
