Re: Extortion You are telling me?

there are definetly many stupid people here.really to many.but for these instances of corruption everybody is pretty powerless as there are no sanctions against them and nobody really cares even though everybody complains about it.
these corrupt lowlives are not worth the effort and waste of "good quality lifetime" to be reported as nothing will happen. you file a report and you propably have more inconveniences than the guy you are reporting.
so you do this once, learn your lesson and never do it again. just another way of dominican life, with lots of warm smiles and empty minds.

Re: Buy yourself out of anything in DR!

DR Veteran: Better yet, you can buy yourself out of anything in DR. Even if you kill someone, the worst that can happen to you is spend six months in Najayo prison living there like a king with women galore, air conditioning, electricity 100% of the times, your own TV, and cheap cellular phone service. While things cool down in those six months, your friendly States Attorney would be lining up things for you to get you a discharge thru the Instructions Judge. The Judge will write up a beautiful piece of self-defense or lack of evidence finding which will not be appealed by any of the States Attorneys and, wham! there you go out. No lawyers needed. Never spend one dime in lawyers in DR. Go straight to the source. That is what is going on in DR. Lawyers are useless except in civil cases, where they take most of your money anyway and get you nowhere. The only people who have problems with the law here are those who have no money, or those who have committed a nationally known crime, such as the LLENAS case, or those who kill priests. The use of scapegoats is another technique. For instance, someone claims responsibility for a crime committed by someone higher up, and goes to jail for a cool down period to Najayo Beach Resort(The name given to our vacationland jail), and since Dominicans have a short memory, in a few months you are out with money in your pocket, or a government job. Even your entire rap sheet is sold back to you for $500 pesos by the prosecutors in complicity with the police.Just recently 1500 rap sheets from the most dangerous criminals in this country dissappeared from police headquarters, sold to their owners. Good Conduct Certificates, needed to get jobs, licenses, etc. are sold for $100 right across the street from the DMVs office. Drivers license tests are passed having the test supervisor press the right answer keys in the computer for you for as little as $500 pesos while all the other tax paying students are in the same room with you. It is easier now in the PRD government to buy anything, because they do it cheaper. The Fernandez government did everything, but selectively to only those who could afford big bucks, so their exposure to public scorn could be less. Did you know that the Najayo Jail cellular phone network is negotiated for sale or purchase just like any corporate stock? For instance, if you own lets say 50% share of the company and you are due to be released from Najayo, you could sell your stock to the next best price holder. The company produces as much as $50,000 a month, some of which goes to the prison authorities. Why do you think even the Police Chief cannot stop this? He goes in every six months, when the press makes a big deal out of it and raids it. But the main computer is buried in the grounds. This computer can steal signals from your own phone, but mostly from government lines, which are never checked. Luxury prison cells are sold by as much as $250,000, but you never lose, because their equity rises higher than apartments in Anacaona Avenue. So learn to live in wonderful DR, the land of fantasy.

So what happens if you raise a fuss? Is there a right way to refuse to pay the "mordida", if that's what they call it in the DR?
