From the Sosua News:

In the month of October expert volunteers of the foundation AAASos?a (Asociaci?n de Amigos Por Los Animales De Sos?a) again helped many animals clinically. More than 120 animals, dogs and cats, received a treatment by the volunteer vets. The animals were registered, weighed, and then received medicine or underwent a surgical procedure. Many animals were sterilized. After surgery, the animals remain under the supervision of the foundation AAASos?a. Since 15 years the foundation is looking for new homes, better said, a new owner for the (stray) animals, that have been treated.

For the coming months, volunteers (veterinarians and assistants) will set up more clinics in Sos?a and Cabarete to give animals a treatment.

AAASosua hold major Clinic for the welfare of animals

The Team has been given permission to post the whole article on DR1 by AAASosua. It was so badly edited by Sosua News that it was really necessary to post the whole article and pictures .

In October, the entire company at Vets To Go travelled to the North Coast of the Dominican Republic for the AAASosua Callejon Operative to perform a spay/neuter clinic in Cabarete at the Dream Project building in Callejon de Loma.

AAASosua ("Asociaci?n De Amigos Por Los Animales De Sos?a, Inc" , which translates to ("Association of the Friends of the Animals of Sosua"), a registered Dominican non-profit organisation headquartered in Sosua, worked in partnership with Vets To Go.
Medications_zpsd297ca73.jpg

At this clinic , supported by the team of AAASosua volunteers ,the seven members of Vets to Go in their Dominican Hound Project, performed surgery on 118 animals. (More details on the Facebook page AAASosua friends of the animals of Sosua and (Vet In Calgary | )

Over the three days of the clinic , more than 20 volunteers and supporters of AAASosua worked with the Vets To Go team by providing help at every stage of the process.
Animals are registered , weighed and then medications for the safe surgery drawn up.

The animal is then prepared for the vets at the Pre-Med station. Many AAASosua members are qualified in veterinarian skills and guide the volunteers.

Here below is Dr Jody of VetstoGo ready to operate with a dedicated team that monitor animal breathing, general and heart condition, and administer anaesthetics.

It is incredible to think that :
? An unspayed female dog and her unspayed offspring can produce more than 67,000 animals in less than 7 years
? An unspayed cat and her offspring can produce more than 420,000 kittens in that same period of time
? 1 non-neutered male cat or dog can sire more than 2,000 offspring in only 1 year
It is estimated that this Clinic will result over time in the reduction of more than 10,000 animals being produced in the North Coast region. (courtesy of Dr W McClallend)

In addition to surgeries by Vets To Go , Dra Gisselle Santos Diaz who has a veterinarian practice in Santiago takes consultations and administers medications. Dra Gisselle is a regular and dedicated supporter of AAASosua operatives.
DraGisselleSantosDiaz_zps77ff1e34.jpg

After surgery the animals need care in recovery by the AAASosua Team and the attention of their owners.

AAASosua has been helping protect, rescue and find lifelong homes for thousands of animals for over 15 years. In 2013 AAASosua performed surgeries on 818 animals with the support of various visiting veterinarian organisations and there are two more clinics planned in 2013.
Board members actively participated in this Clinic . top to bottom : President Judith Liggio, Kim Beddall, Secretary and Member of the Board of Directors, Angie Wolff, Vice President and Member of the Board of directors. Natividad Gonzalez, Member of the Board of Directors also participated in the event.

AAASosua is a non-profit organization established in 1998 offering the consistency that a successful programs need.
The mission of the Asociaci?n De Amigos Por Los Animales De Sos?a is to serve as the leading private non-profit organization within Sos?a, which exists to provide surgical neutering and rehabilitation for animals in need, to improve the care and general well-being of the animals, to promote humane care and concern for all animals by educating the public and by working to end pet overpopulation, to work toward a safe and healthy environment in the community, and to work for the passage and enforcement of laws which promote and provide for the humane treatment of animals.
That said , all the residents and tourists in Sosua and the surrounding area have seen the results over the last decade. There are no packs of hungry and diseased animals roving the streets, no huge litters of half starved puppies with an emaciated mother trying to feed them.
Donations and support is of the utmost importance and AAASosua would like to thank the Dream Project for allowing to use its premises, all major contributors of donations and of course Vets To Go
Local residents also support AAASosua and in 2012 the Charity Golf Tournament at Playa Dorada gave considerable support to AAASosua.
The next AAASosua event is starting on 11th November when World Vets will be visiting for a clinic at The Mariposa School at La Cienega outside Cabarete.
The work of AAASosua can only go on with the continued support of local and overseas donors and the dedicated work of the supporters and volunteers. At AAASosua we hope all that have made donations in the past will continue to support our efforts that make Sosua and Cabarete a better place for the animals!

Update on AAASosua - World Vets Operative, November 11, 12, 13, 2013

The Team has been given permission to post an update on DR1 by AAASosua and thank you , Ken a platinum member, for opening this thread..

In November of 2013, the World Vets team joined staff and volunteers of the Asociaci?n De Amigos Por Los Animales De Sos?a to conduct an extremely successful clinic in the area known as La Cienega which has many, many pet owners who wish the best for their animals.

IMG_1192_zps1be1201c.jpg

Thirteen members of the World Vets team lead by Dr. Joe Zulty and 20+ AAAS staff members and volunteers conducted 139 spay/neuter operations over the three-day event at the Mariposa Foundation building. This brings the total this year to 957 for AAASosua . As a result of their work and the publicity generated by AAAS, we also have 80 more cats and dogs lined up for services to be provided by another volunteer vet in late November. The Clinic produced excellent results, and those results will extend well beyond the time the World Vets team was able to spend here and the scale of the operations can be seen here.
IMG_1277_zps5a7acf3f.jpg

In addition to spay/neuter operations, both in preparation for and during the operative, additional services were provided that will improve the quality of life in the local community for residents and their pets, including vaccinations for Rabies, Distemper and Leptosporosis. Many went home with a new leash and collar/shampoo and dog food.
AAAS and World Vets Partnership
The World Vets Teams that have joined us here over the past two years have been instrumental in allowing us to increase the number of animals we can help. Having multiple veterinarians, skilled technicians and experienced volunteers working in areas around the North Coast helps set up a continuing relationship that can be maintained at our clinic. When you are working in an area with thousands of dogs/cats, it is necessary to offer a high volume operative that allows people to make the choice and see the benefits of spay/neuter. This inspires others in that area to make good choices for their animals as well.
IMG_1245_zps47765bdc.jpg

As the photographs show, pet owners who observe the professionalism of World Vets, combined with a safe, humane anaesthetic protocol, go home with more than a sterilized, vaccinated pet with a new leash/collar, shampoo and some food. They have observed and felt an overwhelming concern for their pet and will take that home with them and share it with their neighbours helping to advance our cause.
IMG_1285_zps125b1dbc.jpg

The World Vets partnership with AAA Sosua has truly made a difference for the many animals here on the North Coast. They have given us hope that if we continue to work together, more pet owners will have a choice and will make the choice that is in the best interests of their animals.
We would like to thank the Mariposa Foundation for the use of their facilities , help and cooperation.
We sincerely thank World Vets for their help, kindness and professionalism and look forward to future visits and more outstanding results..

AAASosua Achieves Target for 2013

The Team has been given permission to post an update on DR1 by AAASosua.

AAASosua Achieves Target for 2013

In the last operative of 2013 held at the AAASosua permanent facility, Dr Frank Alfano spayed the Thousandth dog to pass the target of 1000 animals for 2013 set by Judith Liggio , AAASosua ,President.

This poor liitle puppy was the thousandth dog to receive treatment this year at the AAASosua facility.
IMG_1304_zps53a07d17.jpg

Mona had been found with a badly injured eye and spent 5 days at the AAASosua facility getting strong enough for eye surgery and to be spayed. She spent a further 2 days recovering to ensure she was healthy enough to return to a carer at Mariposa.

IMG_1308_zps49c2dba8.jpg

Since 2008 Dr Frank has been performing spay and neuter operatives, consults and a vast array of professional veterinarian services for AAAS at least once a year. This is the second month long visit for the Alfanos this year.
IMG_1342_zpsa93527cf.jpg

Dr. Frank Alfano,DVM has been involved with the improvement of animal health & welfare in the DR since 1999.
Beginning with Project Samana, a bi-annual 5 day field operative spay neuter clinic comprising of a large group of US veterinarians, technicians and support staff of whom all volunteer their services and equipment to treat pets of the residents, as well as the street animals and a highly specialized equine team visits the campos administering care for mules and even cows. It was through Project Samana Dr. Frank and Karen first became acquainted with AAASosua.
The AAASosua would like to thank Bruce and Cary who made Dr Frank and his wife Karen so welcome in the early visits by providing accommodation at their gorgeous villa by the sea.

Solidifying AAASosua relationship with the US Peace Corps volunteers and their animals has had positive, far reaching effects. Dr. Frank himself was in the Peace Corps (1976-1978). These kids travel far and Island wide with their pets to see Dr. Frank and receive first class veterinarian services not available elsewhere. They then return to their campos showing the locals the importance of animal health and welfare.

When not volunteering for AAASosua Dr. Frank is busy with his own veterinary practice - Deer Run Veterinary located on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA.

A big ?thank you? to Dr Frank and Karen.

IMG_1325_zps95cfba1a.jpg

As this is the last operative of the year , a great thanks to all the dedicated volunteers for staying the course some of whom travel quite a distance to help.

The next challenge is to Annual Christmas Street Fair in Sosua jointly fund raising for Sosua Kids and AAASosua. This is a FUN family event and the first ever AAASosua FUN Dog Show.
See you on the 14th December.

AAAS Trains new volunteers.

Here is an update on AAAS activities. The Team have been given permision to publish this on DR1 and many thanks to Ken for openning this thread.

Two vets from Germany to supporting the efforts of AAAS which aims to humanely control the dog and cat population in and around Sosua by spaying or neutering them. They lead a healthy life but do not produce unwanted offspring.
IMG_1578_zps91204854.jpg

Last year in 2013 the AAAS clinic spayed and neutered over 1000 animals.
The AAAS has been training new volunteers to support all the processes involved in running major spay/neuter clinics around the Sosua - Cabarete area. Volunteers are always needed but this occasion was to train new volunteers for the upcoming major clinics on 14 February thru 16th February at the Fire Station in Charamicos and for the subsequent ones on 18 thru 20 February. The new volunteers, Devon, Yamaly, Yomairolyn , Wendy and Suzanne were present to go through the training for the up coming operatives.
IMG_1589_zps08ec03fa.jpg

Yamairy and Yomairolyn will be helping to run the check in process which is so essential to the smooth running of the operatives. Their multilingual capabilities really help and this is essential to allow correct medications for treatment during the surgery and at the recovery stages.
IMG_1599_zps46db9789.jpg

Devon, Suzanne, and Wendy will be helping with the recovery process and were helped by Carol and Vera who are long term dedicated volunteers of AAAS.
IMG_1665_zpsd8d85c6a.jpg

Judy ? the President of AAAS and Dee Morison ? Executive Director were there to participate and give guidance to the new volunteers. Their knowledge was invaluable in training them.
IMG_1606_zps80f87ae0.jpg

The Clinic in the Fire Station in Charamics is for locally owned dogs but the second one on 18 thru 20 February is by appointment at the AAAS facility at Sosua.

AAASosua Field Operative ? Jardin Deportivo ? Marina?s Outreach Project

Here is an update on AAAS activities. The Team have been given permision to publish this on DR1 and many thanks to Ken for openning this thread.

Marina’s Outreach
IMG_2248_zps8934f9bf.jpg

Marina – a long term dedicated volunteer of AAASosua, has been helping in this area for over three years. Funding the work herself she has seen improvements in animal health and the way owners treat their pets. AAASosua has provided sterilization and emergency medical treatment to support Marina. In her work she identified the need for a major field operative to spay/neuter over 30 animals and thanks to the many donations AAASosua went ahead with a field operative on March 12. This was the second major field operative of 2014 following the one held in Charamicos in February.

IMG_2239_zps8a3d2ac4.jpg

IMG_2235_zps60e9289c.jpg

Dr Susanne Vogler of Tierarztpraxis Wurster Strasse was over here from Bremerhaven, Germany and was joined on the operative by Dr Frank Alfano from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA.
.
IMG_2231_zpsad3315ce.jpg

Many of the volunteers from earlier operatives were there and it was good to see Francine as she has been recovering from a nasty bout of Dengue.
IMG_2233_zpsabac9e25.jpg

A field operative is always a major event and the local owners were lining up with their pets knowing that the care would be of the highest.
IMG_2227_zps25599e13.jpg

IMG_2228_zps430d0fb6.jpg

Louise Armitage and her daughter Nicole , visiting from Kingston, Ontario had a very satisfying day taking care of dogs in second stage recovery. They brought donations from local Veterinarians and Pet Shops in Kingston of pharmaceuticals and pet supplies.
IMG_2226_zps5aa1067a.jpg

IMG_2241_zpsd89109af.jpg

All this was under the watchful eyes of Judy, President of AAASosua and Dee , Executive Director, and both have a full hands on approach and support all the volunteers.
IMG_2242_zps890fb6bb.jpg

IMG_2244_zpsd1bfac81.jpg

A big thanks for the use of the premises in Jardin Deportivo, to Isabel Gorski of Creole Dogs in Germany for supporting Dr Susanne who also brought supplies of medications from her own practice, also WVServices for veterinerary supplies, and to all the donors and to all the volunteers without whose help this would not be possible.
The next spay/neuter clinics will be held at the AAASosua Facility and will be by appointment.

The dates are : March 17,18 , 20 ,21 Dr Frank Alfano
March 24,25,27,28 Dr Frank Alfano

There will be further operatives in April between 17th to 24th and World Vets May 23rd to 25th.

How much is a spay job on a 6 month old bitch? And is that the best time to do it or should we wait a bit longer?
Thanks
Der Fish

Derfish, we spoke to AAAS last week and have our 30 pound Dominican bitch booked in for spaying for next week (hmmm, doesn't quite sound PC that statement!) They told us our donation would be RD3000.

I bet the local vets will love to hear this!!! AAAS is supposed to be helping those animals and people that can not afford to pay for this type of surgery - Foreigners having their animals fixed in this way are just taking the spot of some poor Dominican or Haitian who cannot afford to go to a regular vet.

you know, not all gringos here have wallets bursting with money. many live on pensions and only manage because they were able to buy their place years or decades ago and they can live rent free. derfish is also looking to spay his dog and he cannot pay for it. but at least he cares enough to try to get it done. and besides, if i read it right, britcouple said they donation would be 3k pesos. this is less than a regular vet would charge but it's more than some "poor dominican or haitian who cannot afford to go to a regular vet" will ever pay.

I had my chihuahua spayed at 6 months. Big mistake. She did not make it.
Internet search later on told me that you should not spay a chi when in heat. They are already very nervous, and being in heat causes problems for stopping the blood. I wish I had known not to spay a chi in heat. Passing this tip along to avoid death of a loved pet. You take in a playful joyful pet and she does not come out. I will still spay/neuter my pets but not when she is in heat.
