We left off where Canoa was sent to trial for corruption, which under the law means immediate suspension from office. The Procurador General of the Republic sent an order to the Sosua city council that they were required to suspend Canoa. This after Canoa had the council in Cabarete refuse to suspend him, declaring that they had decided that the law requiring suspension was unconstitutional. The Sosua council met behind closed doors this week and decided to ignore the law and the order from the Public Ministry. Angela de Jesus, the president of the Sousa council (sala capitular) is from Canoa's Reformista party. To date not one of the seven members of the Sosua council, from PRD, PLD and Reformistas has broken silence regarding why the Sosua council is refusing the order from the Public Ministry to suspend Canoa. Nor has the alcaldes Alana Neuman from the PRD party had a word to say on a matter that has received national coverage.
Today a suit was submitted to the Tribunal Electoral for the suspension of Canoa and the possible sanctioning of the regidores of Sosua and Cabarete who are flagrantly violating the law by protecting Canoa. The suit was submitted by the Foundation for Justice and Transparency, ADECA and the vice-sindica of Cabarete. The court will meet and decide the case on November 14.
One less familiar with the politicians of our area might think that partisanship at least would lead some municipal officials and politicians to denounce Canoa and the blatant disregard of law and the national authorities by the regidores of Cabarete and Sosua. But not even local or provincial officials in opposing parties are willing to do so. When it comes to protecting the corrupt status quo in Cabarete and Sosua, party affiliation does not stand in the way of a united front.
