1.5 million diabetics in the Dominican Republic?

Medical records show the Dominican Republic could have around 1.5 million diabetics. The disease is attributed to inadequate nutrition and sedentary lifestyle. According to the latest Survey on Heart Risk Factors (Efricard), there are 10 diabetics for every 100 citizens and 15% could soon show signs of the disease. As reported, the Plaza de la Salud General Hospital alone sees around 10,000 diabetes patients a year. The details were released on the occasion of the celebration of the World Diabetes Day, Thursday, November 14 with a stroll in the National Botanical Gardens.

Nothing do do with the high sugar diet or what you call glycemic index ( High carbs etc) .
. That is about than 15% of the population .They don't produce sugar here do they?

Next new breaking news. 10 million dominicans have hearing impairement.

That's about where the US is at now and they are heading for 25% in the next 15 years, higher for the Black and Hispanic Demographics. In the US, they've got kids getting type II diabetes as young as age five along with fatty livers.

I blame most of it on the emergence of High Fructose Corn Syrup. 2 liter sodas are under a buck and the average American drinks about 24oz a day(teens much more). Combine that with a microwave diet and computers and you're going to have a health crisis. The sad thing is we subsidize the corn industry and have been since the Nixon years.

100 years ago, the average American had about a tsp of sugar a day. Now it's between a third and a half cup a day.

The lack of sport isn't helping. When I was a teen, I was biking up to 100 miles a week.

One of the things the video mentions is that dietary problems start early. Here's what's in baby formula:

More than 50% sugar. Breast milk has sugar in it as well, but in the form of lactose which isn't as sweet and is metabolized completely differently. You feed a kid milkshakes for the first year of their life then wonder why they grow up to be sugar junkies...

Well my cleaning lady has diabetes and her mother has just died of it... I have tried to put her on a healthier diet but it is hard, they are so used to eating fried foods too.. there is so much GOOD food about but like everywhere around the world we prefer the 'bad' foods to the good ones *sigh* (now where did I put that bar of chocolate, lol!)

Time to invest in pharmaceutical companies that produce diabetes medication.

One of my friends is a diabetic aid. She's saying that Type II Diabetes will hit up to 35% in some urban populations in the next ten years. Some of it is people living in "food deserts" where there is no produce. The school lunch program isn't helping since lobbyists push for chicken fingers choc milk and pizza.

Think this could be part of the problem?

i know what you mean. miesposo maternal grandfather had all sorts of health issues related to his diet. he was told to reduce fat and sugar intake and he said "f**k it, i'd rather die". and so he did. now diseased father of our friend had diabetes for years and would not change his diet even as his health deteriorated. he lost his sight and towards the end of his life was unable to walk. i have seen numerous examples of this attitude i the pharmacy as well when our diabetic clients would snack on cakes and cookies while waiting their turn to buy daily metformina pill.

part of the blame is due to dominican doctors. they are not capable of serving any advice or guidance other that writing prescriptions. they do not explain what diabetes is and what lifestyle changes the patient should undertake. of course many patients simply ignore any suggestions regarding diet anyways, believing that all will be well as long as they take their meds.

White rice takes some of the blame. In the DR its eaten every and is not part of a healthy diet. Brown rice is great but hard to find.

what do you mean by "brown rice"? if it's arroz integral then it's in every supermarket. if you mean wild/black rice then it's not a question of availability - again, you can find it in every supermarket - but a price, about 500 pesos for a small bag.

Do people exercice at all, besides drinking PRESIDENTE? Jus curious

it depends. most slim women i know do not. their figure is due to not eating, youth, good genes, plastic surgery or presence of parasites. some walk on the malecon but this is more of a social occasion than exercise, done at snail pace. young men use gyms and a little side help from pills, injections and such. bear in mind that men often do physical jobs here and that keeps them in shape.
