HI everyone, one of the reason I moved to the DR is to produce my own food.
So I'd like to go fishing (in Sosua). But i'm not at all a specialist (dont even have the equipment) and I dont like tokill animals (I dont eat meat...)

I've seen guys fishing from the shore (on the little sosua beach, in front of hispaniola appts)
But never seen them catching anything...

I think it would be much better to go on the sea. So here is my idea. I could buy a 2 seats kayak and be the pilot
Would a fisher(wo)man like to go with me and then we can share the fish we get???

ok fish is meat, I know. So obviously I need to clarify even if this is not really about the subject I posted.
The reason why I dont like to eat "meat" is because of the way animals are bred and killed.
IMHO it's different for fish as they live free in the sea. So we can say they have a better life than a poor chicken raised in a cage where he cant even move

Why is OK to kill a poor innocent fish swimming freely in the sea?
Fish have feelings and fish Mommys and Daddys too.
Do you wear leather shoes, did those come from a free range cow?
Aren't you a bit hypocritical?

I perfectly understand your point. of course I am a bit "hypocrtical" but I guess I try to be as less as possible.
The idea of killing a fish is not nice to me at all. I only eat fruits and eggs. But eat meat once in a while, only when I go to restaurants or eat a friend's house.
Then I feel it would be healthy for me to eat fish from time to time...

I know the leather shoes argument. It's just not possible to be absolutely perfect...
What I try is to eat as less animals as possible

BTW, those who want to post more moral lessons, feel free as I would probably do or at least think the same. But if you eventually answer the subject, would be cool as weel :)

This is an interesting issue. Is a hen in a cage, fed for as long as she keeps laying eggs living a better life than a fish in the sea filled with sharks and bigger fish that threaten him every day? What do we know of the intellect of hens and fishes, anyway?

We tend to humanize these things too much.

If you keep a hen in a cage all night and feed her, and let her out to roam the barrio during the day, she will return to her cage, because apparently her cage is not all that oppressive for her. I have not had the opportunity to follow a herring around, so I cannot comment on a fish's existence and how free or oppressed by sharks and groupers he might be.

As for the shoe argument, the steer was killed for his meat, not his hide. If we give the hide a Christian burial instead of converting it into loafers and wingtips, are we being more humane?

I do not have the answers, I am just offering this as food for thought.

I am guessing he isnt going to find someone to go fishing. Hahahaha. But the tree huggers and the tree killers are gonna have at it. All I know is, if you want to save an animal from going extinct, get people to starting eating them.

Whats to know....Paddle out in your kayak, bait yourline and toss one end into the water, when you have a bite reel it in, voila you have dinner. You learn by experience whats best for bait and fishing holes. Or are you looking for someone to do the fishing for you

Have a go pro hero strapped to your head in case a 12 foot shark takes the bait and you head out to sea. Might go viral ;)

Diet wise the DR is an excellent place for meat if you are interested in "free range" for the omega3/omega6 balance of the meat. Chickens there are actually truly free range normally growing up on a diet of insects as they were evolved to eat. Chickens are insectivores whose bug pecking behavior was hijacked by humans using grain feeds. At whole foods in the US free range means hey run around eating corn and soybean meal.
Actual local grass fed beef is the norm too, not as a boutique thing, that's normally what's hanging in those open air butcher shops.
