From today's Sosua News:

Last Thursday afternoon, November 21, representatives of businesses (restaurants, bars and hotels) and civil society organizations (association of hotels and restaurants in Sos?a and Cabarete and Office of Tourism) met at the Town Hall of Sos?a. The theme was, what to do with the decline of tourism on the north coast, and then in particular Puerto Plata, Sos?a and Cabarete. The editors of Sos?a-News spoke to Alberto Hidalgo, owner of restaurant Alberto and Wolfgang Sch?nner, co-owner of the restaurant Schnitzel Paradise on the importance of this meeting. Both had been present at this meeting. Both Wolfgang and Alberto were delighted to see that all entrepreneurs of Sos?a and Cabarete were finally willing to work together to defend their interests. Alberto told that there was a preliminary inventory of the worst problems that entrepreneurs have to cope with.
First problem is the high energy bill. EDENORTE, the electricity supplier is the most expensive of the entire Caribbean. How can Sos?a and Cabarete compete with other resorts in the Caribbean when this causes higher costs?

At the meeting it was decided that a delegation will negotiate with EDENORTE for lower energy prices.

As a second point, the high landing rights Gregorio Luper?n International Airport (Puerto Plata) asks airlines was mentioned. The airport of Puerto Plata, according to Alberto, is 30% more expensive than Punta Cana, Saman? and Santiago. During the meeting it was decided to invite representatives from various airports and orientate on tariffs.

The third key point (according to Alberto) was the theme of safety and corruption. The president has already announced that next year the salaries of police, soldiers and teachers will be increased significantly. If you underpay police you create corruption, which is well known. A delegation of this meeting will start talks with the minister in the capital on the expansion of the police and the different tasks of the police.

The delegation from Cabarete also mentioned the complicated traffic situation in this seaside resort. A solution must be found for the traffic problems urgently. There was talk of a bypass road and the construction of a boulevard as a solution to this problem. A committee of experts will try to tackle the problem.

Last point of discussion, the necessity of a good public hospital for Sos?a and surroundings. According to some participants, the construction of a hospital is already included in the budget of the central government for next year. If president Danilo Medina makes a promise then he fulfils it, Alberto Hidalgo said firmly. In the coming months, another meeting will be held to discuss the progress of all actions and plan new actions.

if you underpay police, you will get increased corruption. there in no empirical evidence which establishes that if you pay them adequate salaries, that leads to reduced corruption.

EDENORTE is staffed by a bunch of small minded, corrupt bureaucrats staffing positions that should not even exist. Good luck with every making progress against that.

The airport taxes and fees are a killer, but what is the motivation for the airport at POP to change those fees? The promise of more business if they do? They don't "think like that" here.

As for the corruption, check what is happening on the threads about the mayor of Cabarete.

I know that slow progress is frustrating.
The only hope of a power block is, that business owners in the tourism sector work together.
They will have a better chance to be heard. The government is interested in tourism revenues.

Build a causeway across the bay.. :)

The problem with a bypass is the town is surrounded by swamp land.

All the buildings on the ocean side are illegal. Should never have let anyone build there. Now the same people, through bribes or whatever built there are complaining about the traffic. My solution tear them all down.

While removing half the businesses on the main strip in Cabarete would likely reduce the traffic problem, it is even less realistic than hoping that the business association can actually accomplish anything with Edenorte, the airport or the corruption. And that is not very realistic.

Exactly. They will have the same problem 20 years from now but it won't matter tourists will be long gone.

It will never change. Salaries could be the same as the US or Canada that will not stop corruption. Look at the Generals and other high ranking police, the make 100,000.00's US$ per month and they keep on .......

I agree with most of wht you said but it can change, build a few more jails and start at the top. Get these generals to account for where all their wealth has come from. If the lower ranks see that generals are not getting away with what they are doing, they would think twice am sure.

Looks like he has zero knowledge on the subject, or base it on rumors, talks and "forums"

I sat through that meeting, and the article from Sosua News posted at the top of this thread bares almost now relation to what was discussed. No one from Cabarete mentioned traffic. The discussion on the higher cost of Puerto Plata was not related to taxes or fees, but simply the fact that the airlines jacked up their prices to Puerto Plata. There was no mention of action to be taken on Edenorte rates. I could go on, but best just to disregard that entire article.

Would you care to elaborate on what WAS discussed then?

you are kidding, right? do you really think that such measures could operate in a culture wherein corruption is normative?

That's interesting. For years I have been told that the airline fees for POP were higher than elsewhere in the country. No truth at all in that rumour then?
