Has anyone every played in the Casino by After One in Sosua? Is it a scam? I am a fairly seasoned Black Jack Player and I am thinking of going - just wondering if there are any obscure rules or other concerns there.

Had a strange experience at a BJ table in Costa Rica where they dealt the dealers cards last one after another and also didn't take a hit on 16 which was BS and gave the casino the edge. Thinks like that - or do they play standard rules you would expect in AC or LV?

Actually, no, it's not.

In that situation with a standard 52 card deck, there are 20 cards that the dealer can take that will benefit the dealer (four each of ace, 2,3,4,5).
But there are 32 cards that would cause the dealer to bust (four each of 6,7,8,9,10,Jack, Queen, and King)

And as to casinos in the DR, I would never play in a game where the rules are not conspicuously posted, and the game is regulated by a reputable authority. (Neither of which I've seen here).

"Ya got to know when to hold em', and know when to fold em'."........and in the DR, I would always fold em by not even playing.

i have never played any games of chance, so i know nothing about games like blackjack. i do, however, have a Chinese friend who is a master of the game. we went to a casino in POP once, and he was murdering the house. every few minutes, they would change the dealer. my friend informed me that in reputable casinos, the dealers are changed at regular intervals, and not because a guy might be winning. is he correct?

In A/C the dealers work 40 minutes on 20 minutes off. Its has nothing to do with the house winning or loosing its about breaks for the employees.

You have to be very careful in the DR Casinos. Texas Hold 'Em and Black Jack are safe, but any game that is unique to the DR can lead to a shake down. It's not like Vegas where there is a commission to make sure things are on the up and up. You see posts here once in a while about someone being taken for up to $10,000 on a progressive betting game and you have to watch your drinks for drugging.

The dealer is not suppose to be "in play." The players hit or hold base in part on what the dealer is showing and his lack of options. The dealer plays last~ if he had options to hit or hold knowing what he had to beat, it would give him a significant edge.

Actually it is

You have to also understand that there is an increase in the multiples of hands that will beat the 16 if the dealer stands on that number

Not to get in an argument with you, but I stand by my original statement.

I'll admit that in a very, very small number of situations, hitting a 16 could, again, could, be to your advantage (especially if you are card counting!). But in the overwhelming majority of situations, the odds of "busting" when you have a 16 are strong (see my example above).

But don't take my word for it. Google "Blackjack Simple Basic Strategy" and see what the math experts advise you to do. :)-)

And I also stand by my original advice: avoid gambling in casinos in the DR. But if you must, be extra alert for non-standard rules and possible scams.

The good things about casinos (If there is such a thing) is that we play with our own money using our own strategy, your play or mine will not affect any of us

I doubt you will find any expert advice on the dealer standing on 16, only basic strategy for the player

It's even simpler than all that.

When the house has to hit 16 there are only 5 card count combinations that can beat you...17..18..19..20..21

When the house does NOT have to hit on 16 there are 6 card count combinations that can beat you if you have 16 or less.

That's why when the dealer shows 5 nobody takes a hit.

I never heard of the house not having to hit 16 or less. I would never gamble there. Any variation in blackjack is enough to throw your game strategy which should be 2nd nature by now. I never gamble in the D.R. mostly because in a place where being robbed by the police is not a headline why would you trust a casino?

I do most if not all of my gambling at the peleas de gallos (cock fights). You will never be ripped off at the arena or robbed to and from the cock fights. You can tilt the odds slightly in your favor if you know the sport.

My 1st trip to Santo Domingo there were cock fights in the street below by balcony. I had a ring side seat. This was before the curfew so they went on all night. The guy who owned the bodega across the street walked around the store all day with his prize rooster cradled in his arm.

Yes, that happened to my son and girlfriend two years ago in Sosua...goons came looking for them the next day, took their passports...little did they know they were on the next plane ride home ...they called the embassy and they got them on the next plane back to Canada...my son was freaked out over it and said he would never return to DR or Sosua ...

I got taken out to the fights in the campo once. My host said it was safer if I stayed out of the inside arena because he was afraid some random guy would claim I had a bet with him and wasn't paying up. I could see fine from the outside and it didn't stink of sweat so much. Really quite an experience. I thought it was a riot some kid was giving shoe shines to these guys who were walking around in the dirt. A shine would have lasted about five minutes. The big thing besides who won was how long the matches would last. Fun for an hour or so, but I don't think I'd ever want to make a habit of it.
