Perhaps bad parenting? If an obese child is being fed soda and french fries at McDonalds is it not a crime?

Prosecute a few parents and a few million others will get the point.

How does a 12 year old get to be that weight? Thats alot of crap food in a very short time, and total lack of physical activity?

There can been hormonal issues involved. We have an eight year boy at the school that is 5 foot 7 seven, around 160 lbs and size 11 shoes. He eats no candy or pop, but he has a pituitary gland problem.

not exactly a short time, she's been fattened like a pig for slaughter for 12 years. incredible. what's worst the skin must have been stretched already and will not bounce back, even at that age. the bypass is just the first step, usually followed by chopping off excess skin and reshaping the body.

There are medical causes aside from diet. But bad diet can create leptin resistance, which makes the kid always feel hungry and then you have a negative feedback loop. Like they say, when you hear hoof prints, look for horses, not zebras. Fructose is safe in moderation, but a can of soda is about as bad for your liver as a can of beer. It's not something to give your kids on a daily basis and we've got kids now who drink two 32oz "sports" drinks(or more) a day.

Did the girl have a "medical" condition that contributed to the weight gain? I may have missed that. Gastric Bypass is a lot for a 12 year old to endure. Not to mention the possible complications. It also involves a lifestyle/eating change, a lot for a 12 year old. My 13 year old nephew is a big boy, too big in my opinion. I blame it on the lifestyle he is allowed to have. On the computer all day, playing video games, drinking soda and fast food, etc...I have had many a argument with my sister in-law over this. Luckily as he is maturing he is understanding that being overweight is not a good thing and he is trying a bit more to change his habits. He is spending the holidays in the US so let's hope it is not all fast food for him.

Hopefully the family is also getting counselling and guidance with nutritional cooking/eating. As a 12 year old she will need a lot of support.

It was not "Gastric Bypass Surgery", it was the placement of a "Lap Band".
A blow up "ring" that makes the usable part of the stomach VERY tiny.
Inserted through a small hole in the patients "Belly".
Not a major surgery like a "Bypass".

PS, note to "Peter", please do not include anymore "Links" that support your food choices "Agenda".
We "GOT IT"!!!!!!
It's not "DR Related",...."PERIOD"!!!!

cccccccc, thanks for the explanation, i am not fit to tell the difference between various methods to reduce the stomach size. i believe her doctor is a specialist in laparoscopic surgeries so the procedures are not that invasive.

none of the articles mentioned that. they did say that she is under psychological care, thou.

I can imagine her days at school are tough. Bad parenting. Thankfully i never see fat kids h?r e, which is nice.
