the cinema is currently being renovated and will reopen soon, in about a month. not sure how will it work...

a cinema in POP is not such a bad idea but maybe someone should finally get the point that is will be better to make a cinema in a city center where it's accessible to local people. there aren't enough tourists in playa dorada to make it profitable. i have seen it close probably 3 times already, in my (nearly) 8 years in POP.

only a certified genius invests in a cinema in a tourist enclave.

i actually love mozart la para :) i saw an interview with him a while ago and he seems to be quite intelligent and well spoken :)

anyways, changes in POP... there are lots of rumours. i've heard that the owners of one of large shops in POP plan to construct a plaza in the city center with a cinema. that does not bode well for the guy who's fixing playa dorada cinema...

i would like to see hotel montemar on the malecon fixed and brought back to its former glory. not sure if it can be done at all and the construction is still strong enough. i think the bishop/church own this property now? there was also a beautiful recreation complex at the eastern end of the long beach, with pools, restaurants and so on. all long gone. great location for that type of a project, shame it went bust.

You are so right about the business planners here in pop. Bad idea for cinema in Playa dorado. Should be downtown. Now
they are opening 2 new gas stations within 1 block of each other. I thought one would be for propane, since I have to go so far to fill the kitchen tank. But Noooo they are only for gasoline. :)

Sometimes things are done for reasons other than making money directly...

There are significant investments being made in playa dorada including renovation of existing hotels, conversion of hotels to condos, and tearing down some hotels and rebuilding.

To actually make this an attractive venue for tourists, get bookings, and make money for the investors... Casinos, shops, activities, and a movie theater can be part of the package. The theater may or may not make money... But it could have been a requirement of investors and could be funded or supported financially by them or the association of hotels in playa dorada.

maybe i am missing something, but why would someone from a country which gets the movies first come to the third world for a few days vacation and go to the movies?

It used to be a great "lads night out" We would be a group of expat guys and go down to Playa Dorada Plaza, have a few beers at the English pub in the corner (can't remember the name), then watch the film and a pizza at the Hut afterwards.

The last film we saw there was Casino Royale.

Would be nice to do that again.

Why do people assume that everything is for the tourists? Go to any movie theatre in Santiago or Santo Domingo, they are packed with Dominicans. The same used to be with the theatre in Playa Dorada years ago until they constantly had technical problems...I went several times and when the power went out for 15 to 30 minutes! Dominicans love the movies just as we do. Not everything here is for tourists. The north coast is ready for both a decent movie theatre and a mall...there are enough residents here, both Dominicans and foreigners.

Now see,

If you had an original thought every decade or so, and didn't have to rely on scholars and raw data 24-7.....

Personally, I don't think you would've asked that question......

But with you, that's a good thing. It humanizes you, and I mean that in a nice way.....

Doesn't it feel good to "Not know everything?"

For a brief moment, there was some actual innocence to your post.....

Good job!!
