Cabarete has the honor to host the 12th Caribbean Laser Midwinter Regatta from 17th until 19th January.
The event is organized by 'The Laser Training Center Cabarete'. 30 boats from nine countries participate including a Japanese competitor. Participants must compete 9 times (50 minutes each) with each other in two days. At the races world and Olympic champions participate. Among them are the gold medalist Paul Goodison from England and Anna Tunnicliffe of the USA, winner of a gold medal. But Peter Seindenberg, 10 -time world champion in the category of GMM, has also subscribed for the contest. For each category there is a prize pool of $ 5,000 available. But it isn't for the money that the, most of them wealthy, participants compete, it is for the points they can win for the ISAF world ranking list. A week later, the Miami Olympic Regatta sailing regattas in the USA is held which also is part of ISAF ranking list. With enough points, the sportsmen can participate in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
