Punta Cana or Juan Dolio?

I am thinking of going to the Dominican Republic mid-December. I am hesitating between Punta Cana and Juan Dolio - what's the best of the two for a first timer in the DR?? also which of the 2 is the best diving spot?...

If you are an advanced diver, then you would be better off chosing one of the hotels in the Bayahibe-Dominicus, La Romana area. Viva Resorts has good dive programs.
