A friend has asked if I can bring in an unlocked smartphone next month to replace a broken regular cell he's been using.

Question - are phones that operate on 2G networks sufficient in the DR or is this dependent on the carrier (Claro or Orange). Unlocked 2G phones are pretty cheap in the US given their obsolescence now. Thanks, R

Yes they do, most cheap phones here are also only use 2G. You can even get some data/internet connection on 2G with EDGE speed, but that is pretty slow with today's standards - for data/internet you are better off using 3G. For voice calls and test messaging 2G is fine.

If it's only for chatting, it could work. Files or photo transfer will be hell. Web browsing, a torture. GPRS will give you about 30-40 kbps, EDGE maybe 100-150 kbps. That's like 2003 all over again.

I've been using EDGE while roaming on the VIVA network thru T-mobile. It's slow but since it's free to roam I have no complaints. Email checking is a snap, Whats app works fine, Facebook is super slow.
