I went to the Mercure Hotel santo domingo 1st time wasnt scared i was grown up in Jamaica no country wost than that. anyway..
I stayed in this hotel for 2 weeks everything was great till the 7th say Ay dios mio lol
I party alot i had a local i have known for years to be my Translator and he scared off the beggars when they try to get to close so i felt safe.
One night drunk and horny what can i say i am only human i decide to take a Burgarrone to the hotel but i took necessary steps by having my friend there before taking my guest up stairs i too both my guest ID and gave it to the Security guard down stairs and ask him not to give the Id back untill he call my room to make sure i was safe i even wrote all this down and give it to the guard..

Long story short The Burgarrone un plugged the phone pulled out a knife at me and my friend we fought a lil bit and he ran out with my wallet only got away with 500 pesos because my money was in the safe .. i pluged the phone back in and call down stairs for 10 minutes no answer untill i ran down stairs security was on facebook on the internet he spoke no english so my friend was doing all the talking ..He told my friend to tell me Thats my fault and thats not his job to hold on to one id and call to make sure i am ok wow i siad..

Anyway i finished my days there and Trust me i will never booked my vacation at that hotel..

I will return to DR in march and i will be staying at a more safe hotel..

Maybe the OP should use an escort service. Picking up prostitutes iff the street is not safe. Not in the DR and not anywhere. Can hardly blame the hotel. Having said that, there are plenty of hotels that are guest friendly but u will be required to check them in at the front desk. There they make copies of the guests id. In fact if i were mongering i would only use hotels that require the guests to be checked in.

But the good news is u were out to get screwed and u got it.

Moderator Should Change Title Of Thread

This title does an injustice to Mercure. There is nothing in the thread to indicate the Mercure is not safe. It was the OP who brought the thief into the hotel and the room.

I think the point the OP is making is that the security guard accepted the cedula which is supposed to give the client some kind of security and was told not to give it back until the client said so. However, the security guard gave the bad guy his cedula back without knowing if all was well. Thus, he's saying that the hotel's security is no good.

I don't know if he's right or not, but that's his opinion.

Yes, that seems to be his opinion. But it does not sound like there was any discussion and it doesn't sound like the security guard said he would do what the OP wanted. It sounds like he walked into the hotel with some yahoo he picked up on the street and as he walked past the guard he gave him the cedula and said call me before you give it back.

Absent in his post is any evidence of commitment on the part of the guard.

At the condo where I live in Sosua it is our policy to hold the cedula of visitors until the person who brought in the visitor comes personally to the guard and says give it back. Renters are told this is our policy when they register. But I am not aware that Mercure has such a policy and doubt very much that they do, and I am as sure as i can be the OP never checked on this during the he week he was there prior to this incident.

I think the OP should accept the fact that when you pick up people on the street you can put yourself in a dangerous situation and you can't depend on others to protect you unless you have determined in advance whether this is possible and have made definite arrangements.
