According to the other DR English-language website:

"Merchants Federation president Iv?n Garcia on Tuesday reiterated the call for a nationwide walkout Wednesday and Thursday, to reject the requirement to immediately install tax receipt printers and a higher sales tax (Itbis)."

Basically, even though businesses have known about this new requirement for some time, they don't have enough time or money to install new machines. So they're going to stop doing business completely unless the government agrees to discuss the issue.

THE FOLLOWING IS MY OPINION:

Many of these businesses have been collected the taxes but not reporting them accurately to the government, paying only part. The new machines are going to force them to pay all the tax that they are collecting.

In the instances where I know businesses have been underreporting, they say they are going to pass on the cost to their clients/customers, as they have no choice. Many are not opposed to paying their fair share of taxes if the money went to something other than an inflated military, policemen on every corner who spend their days talking to pretty women, and yearly luxury SUV's with military drivers for anyone with a government botella who wants to feel important.

OPINION OVER:

Keep an eye out for strike for the next two days. We'll see how this develops.
