"Due to safety concerns about locally purchased Sinutab and Sinutab Plus manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, U.S. Embassy Santo Domingo strongly recommends that U.S. citizens not use or purchase these products locally until further notice. If you have made local purchases of these drugs, we ask that you destroy it or refrain from taking it until we can confirm lot number safety.

"We will put out further information as it becomes available. "

Bought some last week for my cold and I'm still alive... Maybe it's because I'm not a US citizen? :cheeky:

Frank's comment is probably closer to the truth than a safety notice. How does he know about safety when he still has to check the lot numbers. You would think he'd be given the bad lot numbers first.

Most thinking people will recognize that the American Embassy/Consulate are trying to provide a service when they send out information about possible problems with products sold in the DR, both imported and local. They have sources of information that few, if any, on DR1 have.

Since this is something they rarely do, at least to me, a notice like this merits attention.

In this case, they have not said destroy any Sinutab product you might have in your medicine cabinet, they have said it is recommended that you take no more until it can be determined the batch number shipped to the DR.

What you do with the information is up to each individual.

Maybe they saw that it's counterfeit from China, the Chinese seem to counterfeit everything these days even Colgate toothpaste.

That could be. And some of these products have ingredients that are dangerous. I remember a few years ago when a warning went out about a Chinese-made toothpaste being sold in colmados that contained carcinogens.

Fake drugs at La Sirena

That is interesting --- I had a massive cold a couple weeks back - bought some Sinutab at La Sirena on Churchill in Santo Domingo - it had no effect - I suspected that it was fake ... so I bought another brand Winasorb or something. The Winasorb worked fine.

my husband took a sinutab the other day and we had to take him to the emergency room because of an allergic reaction - hives/shortness of breath - and sinutab is our go-to that we've NEVER had a problem with before. the people in the ER told us that there was "something going on" with the import of sinutab and to steer clear.

This toothpaste was bought in Panama in the free zone by the Dominicans, I remember that case. The fricking Chinese ;)

Very sorry to hear about your husband. I hope he is now alright.

I hope those who feel compelled to make asinine statements when product warnings are posted will keep your experience in mind.

Crazy to read this, I had bad sinus/bronchitis issues at the beginning of January and took an entire package of Sinutab with no effect.. maybe this had something to do with it, scary.

EVERYTHING. I got burned on counterfeit razors a year or two back. They also counterfeit malaria meds in Africa. That's some Third Man, Harry Lime kind of $hit. They sometimes use toilet bowl
cleaner to get the blue in the fake Viagras. Glad they executed the jackass who poisoned the Haitian kids by putting anti-freeze in cold medicine. 88 kids died.

Proconsumidor is joining in as they warn people not to consume these products.
Proconsumidor*llama a no consumir antigripal Sinutab

Also some new "insights" about the issue are being provided in the article:
"...hasta tanto no sean publicados por la empresa fabricante los n?meros de lotes de las veintid?s (22) plataformas o paletas de estos productos que fueron enviados a destruir por dicha compa??a a una empresa gestora de residuos en el pa?s, y que posteriormente uno de los clientes de la farmac?utica report? presencia de estos medicamentos en el mercado."

...until the manufacturer can verify lot numbers of 22 palettes of these products that were sent to be disposed of (incinerated, whatever) by the manufacturer through a waste processing company in the Dominican Republic, and which on later date some clients of the manufacturer reported as having found their way to the market...
