The Rotary International Club of Punta Cana ? Bavaro has a collection urn at Punta Cana airport to receive currency donations from visitors to be used for its **humanitarian projects. There are all sorts currency from around the world collected.

Because of the assortment it needs to find a money exchange in the east or capitol that will accept foreign COIN and obscure notes to exchange into Pesos.

US, Canadian, European Union, British, and Swiss notes are willingly received and exchanged at the local banks. Nevertheless, the banks do not accept foreign COIN or obscure notes. There is a local exchange in Veron that will exchange Pesos for some select foreign COIN and obscure notes but at 20% - 35% face value of the currency. Guess something is better than nothing. Don?t wish to be cornered into using one outlet when there may be others.

If anyone has suggestions, please advise.

Regards,

PJT

It may be easier to find someone travelling back to the US.

Thanks for the suggestion, It has been discussed and it would not work out. Finding someone who will pay in Pesos or US dollars for wrapped coins is one thing. Secondly, how to appeal to them to transport heavy coin when one has to consider the bounds of baggage weight and security inspections is troublesome within an already annoying travel environment. People do not want to be bothered with it. Thirdly, the logistics of finding and arranging an exchange with travelers, consumes time and expensive fuel, more than the return from the exchanges.

The club is looking for a one time one stop location to conduct a coin exchange.

If it is in the airport why not talk to a company in that location that exchanges currency for tourists. Perhaps you could work out a deal for them to take in your various currency in exchange for pesos.

Ok - it was just a suggestion. I did not know how much coinage you were talking about or how often. I ran into the same problem with small amounts of change - I could not find anyone who would take coins - only bills. Let us know if you do eventually find a company or bank that will exchange coins.

A good quantity of Rotary members are associated with the airport and Grupo Punta Cana. This association brings some of them in contact with the exhange services at the airport and local merchants. They have inquired. However, the services are bound by their house policy to exchange only approved notes. The Rotary Club has researched all possibilities to exchange foreign coin and obscure notes locally, all for naught.

It follows that if you cannot find what you want in your backyard you search other backyards.

did you try banco central? in poland only a national bank will exchange this type of money. years ago one of the biggest radio stations in poland run a summer competition with cash prices. the cash in question was currency from all over the world and it came from NBP (narodowy bank polski: polish national bank). maybe similar rules will apply in DR? it may be worth a drive to SD.

failing that you could advertise here money packages. there are members from many countries here, maybe some will exchange money from their home countries to pesos, providing they travel home to spend it, of course.
