From today's Sosua News:

During the opening of the 20th International Tourism Fair in Tel Aviv in Israel, Ilana Neumann, mayor of Sos?a, gave a speech to the press. She recalled that the Dominican Republic, during the 2nd World War, was one of the few countries that offered a safe heaven to Jewish refugees.

A large part of the Jewish refugees settled in Sos?a where they became self-supporting by agricultural and livestock. The Jewish community has also brought prosperity to the northern coast of the republic. Since that time, between the Dominican Republic and Israel, there is a special relationship and cooperation. Ilana told the press that now she came to Israel to the Tourism Fair to promote Sos?a, Cabarete and Puerto Plata as a holiday destination. Next her travel companions Giselle D?az and Evelyn Paiiewonsky, as well as the Director of Tourism on the North Coast, Lorenzo Sancassani, brought the tourist attractions of Sos?a, Cabarete, Puerto Plata and Maim?n under the attention. The press conference was attended by journalists from almost all Israeli newspapers and the following days much has been published in the media.

One of the original Jewish settlers in Sosua was named Neumann. Was that the mayor's grandfather?
