this may be one of the reasons for the north coast decline in tourism. i live in tampa and to pop thru miami is 640$ yet if i go to santiago ,santo domingo or even punta cana again thru miami its only 359$ that is a big difference . i think american air is causing all of the problems . as the flts to miami are the same its just the connecting cities which are farther from miami so they should be more?
anybody have any other reason for the higher prices?

Aerodom is Killing everywhere they have the administration, usually almost half of the final price are airport taxes.

but doesn,t aerdom run most of the airports in the country? that would mean the taxes would be same for all flights from say miami?

I heard this too.... my friend just arrived SDQ fro MIA..... drove the rental to Cabrera.

Whenasked why not POP, the difference was too much - he said $500 but that may have been $250 each

any way, he was put off POP by the price..... one of the travel days was a Wednesday - best day of week normally, pricewise

Actually, it's been this way for a while. AA has only one flight now MIA/POP and none SJU/POP which means NO competition. JFK flights have been reduced as well. Combine the Aerodom high prices at POP and you get an expensive POP from the USA. Aerodom does not have all the airports but are a big reason POP is too expensive.
Out of my last 20 trips to the D.R. only twice have we used POP and our home is in Sosua. It is bad but I'll fly to STI or SDQ to save $500 in a heartbeat. Image how much Catnip $500 can buy Frank.

I have stopped searching for flights to POP a while ago, the price is always ridiculous from NYC :( (even though I flew there the first 2 times I went to DR, 4 yrs ago)

most of our visitors who fly from the states go to STI. those from europe do charters (if from london) or airberlin. but charters from london went up considerably since i've been here.

I've experienced the same over the years but lately it seems that it depends at what time of the year you're traveling on AA from MIA. I checked several times to see if it was worth coming/leaving from Santiago, and ended up with the very same fare. Slightly cheaper from SDQ but not worth the cost/time of taking a cab/bus to POP

the airports have actually nothing to do with airport taxes. they are set by the Dominican gov't and are the same no matter which airport you fly into. as an example, fly united from ewr to either sdq, pop or puj and the Dominican taxes are 82.60. the remaining taxes that you pay, 59.50 are us gov't taxes for custums, immigration etc. for a grand total of 142.10

Airport taxes do not have thing to do with the goverment, if you check the detail of the fares you will see where goes everything, part for Fuel compensation, and airport taxes, what we pay for IDAC is like 2.50 dollars and some others are like that.

Many people are now checking other destinations or all inclusives; the word is out that it is no longer safe on the north coast. I have only been coming here five years and I know personal two people shot and one woman assaulted
The less people coming the poorer the economy the worse the violence will become, it is self fulfilling

Bred, very good eye for detail. With the breakdown of those taxes, it narrows it down to airline fees.
Is it just lack of competition???

just checked yesterday and the taxes on a flt into pop and Santiago are exactly the same the only difference is the amount American charges . flt to pop 486$ flt to Santiago is 202. and last time I checked it was a longer flt and both flts start from tampa to Miami and Miami to both airports. boy what a rip off American has when they have control of a market. but I guess when you are the only player in town you can charge what you want.
