I read this morning that the D.R. has dropped to number nine in the list of most likely countries in which you are likely to die in a traffic crash. The only other country in the western hemisphere to make the top (bottom) ten was Venezuela.

When you say we dropped to #9 does that mean we went from somewhere in the 1 to 8 position down to 9. If so that would be reason to celebrate. Naturally drinking and driving will be involved. Hope that the celebration doesn't effect our new ranking

I doubt these figures and rankings mean anything. I have been driving drunk here in DR for almost 12 years and I have never killed anyone (although fortunately crippled a few moto conchos) nor anyone under my responsibility. I havent even really had a crash.
I cant say the same about driving in Europe.
The Dominican Republic is probably the safest place to be a drunken driver, unless you are sober.

The only safe way to get around here is to assume that every other driver is either drunk, drugged or asleep at the wheel!

Since the AMET in Sosua are teaching a safety course we can expect a significant improvement in driving on the North Coast. The rest of you are doomed.

Back at the beginning of recorded time, when I was in college/university - things were different.

Leaving the pub at closing we did not want to be arrested nor did we want to have an accident.

After some serious pondering we decided on a foolproof solution to both.

We drove home on the sidewalk......... no cars, out of police jurisdiction... perfect

Did it numerous nights........ winters were best b/c we were hidden by the snowbanks.

en serio...... my friend's little Austin Sprite fit well on those sidewalks

They should have given me already lots of medals because everyday when I go out, I save many lives. Sometimes I do regret this though.

Recently, on the forum, someone posted that we were worse than Thailand. This new data says not so and that our neighbor to the south is even worse.

I would assume any statistics from third world countries are worse than reported. Much worse.

O.K, I am going to count on Iran , Iraq and Sudan to honestly and correctly report vehicle deaths.

Looks to me like a 3-way tie for 8th place. What is striking, is that the DR is the only Caribbean country to make the list. Having driven in Puerto Rico (yes, I know its not a country), I feel it should be ranked up there as well

I would have expected countries like India to be there as well. Is Haiti safer? I've never driven there so not sure.

I knew we were bad but that list is even worse than I thought. All the third world countries either lie to encourage tourism, really have no real idea or both. The DR is the most dangerous driving I have ever seen. The DR at night is even worse than that.
