Can a stranger (Canadian) with no residency can open a bank account in the DR easily?

If yes, what bank you suggest?

Today "easily" is a big word, but bring with you a reference letter of your bank, some bank statement to prove your income, your passport, I opened one with Leon

Why do they need proof of income if you're just depositing money?

been discussed 100 times here----- much depends on which bank and on which day.

Bring as much info as possible and try as many as you need until you get an account.

period

Popular you need residency or so they told us amongst many other documents and reference letters, we are opening an account with them right now and it is not easy, neither is Scotia Bank, we already have an account with them.

My buddy opened an account here in one day with a smaller bank, I can't remember if it was Ban Reservas or Leon.

Easy and opening a bank account really should not be allowed in the same sentence here.

Also anyone know if the banks in DR allow transactions/wires between them and online gambling? I doubt its a problem but in Canada some banks where starting to refuse and closing account that where linked to online transactions with casino/poker site etc.

Jeanchris, the best thing to do would be go to the bank and ask what you need as it is so different with all of them. Don't bother with Scotia or Popular they def will not let you have an account.

Ok good to know, probably the first two place i was going to visit! lol

Jean, your passport is required if you do not have a cedula for identification purposes. They will question as to why you do not have a passport.

Back in 2008, I had my Cdn ScotiaBank book my appointment w. the RD ScotiaBank..... smooth process.

Subsequently , opened another at Progreso.... used a friend.

Jan 2013 it was NOT a smooth process at the Branch in Cabarete and we had land titles here, reference letters from banks back home, pay check stubs, lawyers reference, personal references, a lot of money in the bank, reference from my job etc.

It took a month to open it with about 3 visits.

Popular in Cabarete this month we needed, passport, proof of residency, 2 personal references, professional reference, DR scotia bank letter of good banking, Vancouver bank account letter, proof of income, letter from my wife's job in Cabarete, land title and she can only have the bank account in her name bc I do not work here as I am retired. I am sure I forgot something too, it is ridiculous what they want!
This took 2 visits and we have been waiting for 2 weeks so far for approval.

Will go to BanReservas and see if they can do it, i can get references from people living here easily, just dont have any proof of income/revenue.

Thanks for the informations,

I opened my account at Scotiabank with only my passport. It doesn't only depend on which bank but strangely also on which sucursal.

In Barahona I met a Swiss guy who retired there and he recommends Scotiabank because they give better rates on currency exchanges that the others, even though the nearest branh is in Azua, 77 kms. away.
