It could have something to do with hospitals. When my child was born the first thing the nurses did was introduce bottle milk dispite the mother having plenty of breast milk. Then mom only gave breast milk as a last resort. After 2 months she dried up. It should be encouraged more. Its healthier and its cheaper.

There is always the possibility that they are simply very bad at compiling statistics. 7% seems pitifully low. It is not like they send out questionnaires. My guess is that the only thing they know is whether the mother was breastfeeding when she left the hospital.

i think they must use more data than just initial hospital stay, after all the criaturas (love the word) need to come back to the hospital frequently in the first months of life for vaccines and checks to determine correct development (hearing, sight, hipbones and so on). note that the 7% is "exclusively" fed on breast milk. many mothers will supplement breast milka with occasional bottle due to the lack of time or low quantity of milk.

my SIL have birth in october. on the first day no nurse helped her out with feeding (i am told it is not as easy as it sounds). then the baby had digestion issues, allegedly due to allergies, despite the fact that they never saw allergy specialist. to make matters worse my SIL then developed bad infection of her c-section area and need to antibiotics. needless to say this was the end of the breastfeeding.

because free has no value. someone mentioned this before but there is a tradition in DR to save all cans of the milk the baby had so that on the first birthday you can take a picture of the kid with all the cans in the background to show how much money you spent. i spoke to my SIL about that and she says that her friend from the university does that, with all 3 or 4 of her kids. well educated, rich and still a dumbf**k. SIL is keeping the lids of the milk cans. she says she will decorate a xmas tree with that. god help. i just shook my head. pathetic does not even begin to describe it.

They could take a picture of all the good food the mother ate while breastfeeding. That isn't free if you eat nutritious food.

I remember a friend of mine breastfeeding her baby while visiting her Dominican husbands family and they asked her why she would do that since she was a "Rich" woman. :)

from what I see, many of these women could breast feed a school.

the lack of breast feeding surely isn't a lack of supply..... huge reservoirs at the disposal

From all the years that we have discussed this on DR1 the reasons seem to be from what DV8 said to thinking that it will make breasts sag later. Little do they know that breasts will sag at some point regardless. ;)

BTW size of breasts do not = amount of milk supply but I know you're just trying to be cute

I do not believe it. 1. No self respecting Dominican is going to pay for something that is free. 2. Most are not literate and cannot read well enough to fill out forms in an intelligent fashion. 3.Statistics here are almost always wrong. For example the last census. They came around and put stickers nearly everywhere but never really interviewed anyone. None of my neighbors were counted. I and my family were not counted. That is the way things work here. Is this a great country or what.

2 babys in my inlaws at thos time ( bodosco #1 and bodosco #2 ).......
Neither are breast fed...... much better to use powdered milk, they say........ yeah sure.........

Than they wonder why kids ( and later adults ) are ill all the time....... nothing scientific, just my point of view.......
Si dios quiere, they say , as if dios wanted them to use powdered milk.......

But I suppose it is a hardning up against a life of eating dominican salami!!!!!!

And of course there's no brugal or presidente in powdered milk....... how convinient......

Nestl? spent a lot of money years ago trying to convince women through advertising and hospital freebie promotions that bottle formula (produced by Nestl?, of course) was the modern and best way of feeding babies. This resulted in the Third World in disease and death for many babies, as the water supply was not actually clean, and Nestl? and the formula manufacturers backed away from their promotion, dead babies not being good for business and all.

I doubt that 93% of all Dominican women refrain from breastfeeding. I question the survey.

Forgot one thing. Isnt infant formula pretty expensive?

i believe it. i worked in the pharmacy, i know how much milk we sold. and yes, it is expensive, which is why it is sometimes diluted more than it should be. there are also other things fed to kids such rice water of sugary herbal tea. add to this absent mothers who leave their children with family members and you have the sad situation regarding breastfeeding. and i assure you that "free" is not valued here. the more expensive something the more pride it gives.

of the young mothers i know here none was exclusively breastfeeding and most used formula from the get go.

Wow! At least they don't save the "Pampers"... that would be quite the photo..

I see it daily in our Barrio and have talked about it with mothers, they all buy and use formula.
When my friends date DR women they constantly ask for them to buy formula for the babies, I don't know if 7% is accurate but it is close I am sure!

again, i'm reminding you guys this is 7% fed EXCLUSIVELY on breast milk for the first six months of life. not 7% that get to suck on a titty altogether.
