Monday, April 21 officials of 'La Junta Central Electoral' ( JCE ), so the Central Electoral Board, started providing fraud-proof ID cards (cedulas) to the Dominican people. The issuing is currently taking place in mobile offices in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Los Alcarrizos, San Pedro, La Romana, San Francisco, Puerto Plata, San Juan, Azua and Barahona. The new cedula are provided with 20 security proofs making falsification impossible. According to the JCE the new cedula is valid for 10 years and is provided for free to the public. The issuing of new cedulas to foreigners will be discussed the next months.
To be eligible for a new cedula it is required:
1: A copy of the birth certificate
2: A blood type certificate from an approved health care center
3: In case of change in the marital status, a copy of the marriage certificate
Whether these requirements also apply to foreigners, is not yet clear. For free it will probably not be.

I was in SD on Tuesday this week renewing residency and went for cedula. Duh. Mobbed with dominicans. I was given a piece of paper on which was typed:

Extranjeria JDE: Tel. 809 537 9649.

And so we wait...

I was also told all the other offices are only available to dominicans, not foreigners. So yes, another trip to SD.
