Santos defeats World Champion Merritt at Jamaica Invitational

Kingston.– Dominican Luguelin Santos, Olympic runner-up, defeated World champion LaShawn Merritt of the United States in a stretch duel that had the crowd in a frenzy during the 400m final at Jamaica International Invitational, an IAAF World Challenge Meet, on Saturday night May 3.

Santos outleaned his rival to score a narrow win in 44.82 seconds, while Merritt clocked 44.86. Saudi Arabia's Youseff Al-Masrahl took third in 44.96.

Two-time Olympic 400m hurdles champion Felix Sanchez passed 2013 world champion Jehue Gordon (Trinidad & Tobago) after the final hurdle to win in 49.21. Gordon, who at 22 is 14 years younger than Sanchez, came in second in 49.32.

Merritt is having a hard time maintaining any level of consistency. he failed to even get through the Olympics qualifiers, then comes back to win the World Championships the following year, with an excellent time. then he gets beaten by Santos, whom he defeated handily in Moscow. look for Santos to be at the front in the next Olympics.

You can see where, in the last seconds, Merritt just ran out of steam.

Should be an interesting race in the summer Olympics.
