Just bought one today at a local food store for $1.39 and it was imported from DR, I wonder where and which company it was imported from in DR?

It appears to have been imported by Chiquita. They have a phone number, there is a lot number, you can call and ask them.

So, why did you ask?

I thought perhaps that the person asking the question really did not know. There are many people who cannot notice the obvious.

Many people are unaware that Chiquita Brands no longer has plantations or grows bananas. They are only an importer and a distributor. They discovered that they can make more money that way, and it eliminates problems with the growers.

In Miami, banana prices vary a lot: Presidente sells them for as low as 25? a pound, but more often charges 3 pounds for a dollar, and never more than 2 pounds for a dollar. WalMart "Always low prices" always sells them for 58? a pound. Whole Foods sells organic bananas for over a dollar a pound.

you should not be buying bananas in a supermarket in the DR, anyway. if you go to a town like Mao, the things are so cheap it is laughable. buy them off one of these small trucks, and 50 pesos gets you all you can carry.

Around where we live, they sell bananas individually - usually 5 pesos each, but sometimes 3 for 10 pesos.

Buying bananas at a supermarket in the RD is a very silly thing to do. The city market in any town may be a rather smelly place, but you will save many pesos shopping for fruit and veggies there. How hard is it to wash off a veggie? You should do that no matter where you buy it.

The trucks that cruise around selling produce can be better buys than even the market on occasion.

When I was in DR on vacation with my fiances family, there was a cool black guy browsing around with his big cart that he sells fruits. I always buy whole cart of bananas for like 300 pesos and I got almost 100 bananas then I resell them in my fiances father store for 95 pesos each. I made good profit that day.

Are you serious??? No Dominican or Haitian would pay 95 pesos for one banana.

95 pesos is $2.20 per banana. I find this a dubious claim as well.

Perhaps you could get $2.20 for a banana in Tromso, Norway if the harbor were iced in for a month.

Perhaps at the Ross Ice Station in mid-August you might pay that much.

I have seen mangos and avocados labeled "Product of the DR" in Miami. I have not seen bananas or tomatoes similarly labeled.
Someone, somewhere, has statistics on fruit and veggie exports, but we are unlikely to come up with the answer here.
