Last week was possible to remove 20,000rd from BHD ATM's depending on your Foreign limit. Today, tried no love, told me invalid data. US bank told me it did not query their system(was on the phone with them at the time). Tried 10,000 same message. Asked at the bank here and they told me there is now a 5000rd limit, as of their system change on the ATM's.
Tried Popular for 10,000 which used to be the limit, no love, 5,000rd was fine. At 10,000 the ATM told me I had exceeded the daily limit.
This was all on a US bank ATM card.

It has to be the systems here as the US bank is not receiving the query.

I do not believe the US bank can do anything about it; ergo, it's the banks in the DR that own the ATMs that seemed to have decided as a group to reduce limits. They probably see this as a way to increase ATM fee revenue. I don't use ATMs so all the previous is conjecture. Seems reasonable though.

Can anyone provide more than conjecture!???

I was able to get 6000 yesterday. And I don't have a concern about ATM fees because my bank, PNC, reimburses me.

PNC and RBC are related..... RBC Cdn customers get accounts at PNC in the US and can then use the ATMs in RD free of charge.

Google the RBC/PNC connection

I took out quite a bit yesterday- 10,000's at a time (Banco Progresso.) I had no trouble. I also bank at PNC, where the transaction fees are reimbursed.

i thoughts it depended both on a bank and the actual ATM machine. few weeks ago i was assisting a polish guy in DR who tried several machines for cash and the limits were different (from 5k to 20k, depending on the location).

In 1999 and again in 2005 I built houses here out of ATM machines ? 20,000 to 30,000 at a whack. Sometime during Hipolito's reign and again in Lionel's 2nd term (I think) limits as severe as 4,000 were imposed. Our current home was built last year with checks cashed by Rusa.

No one ever had a satisfactory explanation for these limit lowerings, but I've learned to expect meddling of the Central Bank and the politicians who have in mind some impending peril of their own hand.

NB: new Margarita Cat story goes up tomorrow midday.

your 'home' bank.... yes, that's another variable....what you're allowed on your card daily or per withdrawal.

all the card companies know the RD problem

I've noticed that my UK Lloyds bank card no longer works in Banco BHD ATMs and some Progreso machines. I was told by someone inside the Progreso bank that some of their machines do not read the chip on the card, only the mag strip. Strange as my card has both.

So far I've had no problems with Popular, although 10,000 at a time.

My stateside bank has always been BOA. Use Scotiabank here with no charges or problems. Scociabank is also all over the caribbean which helps. I havent seen anyone post about either of these, so I will have to wait and see. 10 k is what I always withdraw.

I go to scotia Bank and this happened to me once. I went inside and asked the teller and she said that sometimes this happens (usually around the time that the locals get their checks). I believe she said the reason is because the bank doesn't have enough money. She told me to come back later that day and the limit was raised.

I have noticed recently that most banks have reduced their withdrawl level to 4 or 5 thousand pesos. (for instance Banko Popular at SDQ airport) Remember the bank gets a fee every time you make a withdrawl so if you need 10 K the bank gets two or three times their regular fee. They are simply ripping off foreigners. Scotia Bank in my barrio still permits a 10K withdrawl.

I've said it before it all depends what area you are in

I find Cabarete keeps the withdrawal amount small.... yet in Cabrera, small place - I can 2 x 10,000 anytime I want.

20,000 is my card's daily limit.........Banco Progreso card

The Banco Popular ATM lowered the limit I could take out with my card. 10,000 has never been a problem before, two weeks ago it would not allow me to even take 5,000. I went inside and got 30,000 (teller said that was maximum per day) in one transaction.

The preprogrammed withdrawl amounts were crazy low, like $100RD, $200RD.

The withdrawal limits depend on location and traffic. An ATM in or near a local populations will have lower withdrawal limits as worker mobs queue up to the machines on the first and 15th of the months to access pay deposits.

ATM's located within or near resorts, hotels, casinos, and high end malls will allow larger withdrawals on a greater spectrum of cards.
