it would not help even if the operator sent the units straight away. but this is what people get for f**king things up. if half of all calls received were pranks you get no service in emergencies. a case of a boy who cried wolf.

yes, I know, there was not much to do there, but the attitude is wrong. You have to take each call for help serious, even when you receive so many prank calls.

it's a case of a population sleeping in the bed they made themselves. operators of 911 need to be serious but also need to warn the callers about the misuse of the services. maybe a coordination of systems should be in check. a caller needs to identify themselves with a cedula number, name and additional data with all operators being able to immediately check in the system that such person exists, where do they live and so on.

Sad as this is, this will now lessen the pranks calls. Unfortunately something like this had
to happen so the population will know that this is not a game. That this is a matter of
life or death.

Don't mess with the 911 system!

Why don't they make 911 call cost 100 pesos? It will solve the problem immediately.

You call that a solution?? Have you never heard anyone tell you: no tengo minutos

Anyway, this will stop by itself. It's like when a new store opens, every single dominican has to visit that store the first day it opens...a few weeks later you see the employees in the store picking their nose the whole day...

After some days the prank calls will stop.

there could be a system in place that will charge the 100 as soon as more minutes are put in. ha ha ha. imagine those petty a**holes making 20 prank calls about the lack of beer, pizza and toto and then crying like babies when every single peso they put in the phone in the future goes directly to 911.

Sounds like some snowflakes need to be made into some public examples.

Harshly.

Fines? ER room detention, where they can see the blood, gore, death & maimings?

"ER room detention, where they can see the blood, gore, death & maimings?"

Well... they should not be allowed to take their cell phones in there... as long they feature a camera that is. Y'know youtube and feisbuk etc....

Regarding the prank calls you can't cure stupid. Too many of them* in this country unfortunately :(.

*Too many stupids I meant.

Prank calls will never stop. But it can be controlled. Although in the US there are fines for prank calls
some do make them, but scarce. The pranksters will "get it" in the DR once fines are imposed. This is
just something new and they do not realize that their prank calls can be/ are being traced. When
realization hits, it will lessen.

Not sure but think you can call emergency numbers even without minutes.

Nothing can be controlled in DR. No rules and no laws can be enforced in DR. Who will enforce them? The same Dominicans like those who make prank calls?

But if they make that 911 call cost 100 pesos, prank calls stop the same day.

Prank emergency calls are a problem in many countries. This is coming up as news in the DR because it's a new system. It will never stop completely but it should lessen.

"The National Emergency Number Association reports that phantom wireless calls account for between 25 and 70 percent of all 911 calls in some U.S. communities. The California Highway Patrol (currently the handler of nearly all California wireless 911 calls) estimates that between 1.8 million and 3.6 million of the 6 million wireless 911 calls it receives annually are phantom. U.K. police estimate they receive 11,000 phantom wireless calls per day to their 999 emergency number. The wide data variations highlight the need for further research to pinpoint the scale of the problem.

However, the problem is already serious enough to suggest that ignoring it could have severe ramifications for police and legitimate 911 callers.

Of all the 911 misuse and abuse problems this guide addresses, phantom wireless calls will show the quickest increase, unless addressed. The U.S. 911 system handles 500,000 calls daily, or about 183 million annually.1 One in four calls are from wireless phones, a tenfold increase since 1991.2 In the next five years, the number of wireless 911 calls is expected to double from the current 46 million per year3 to 92 million annually, potentially exacerbating an already significant phantom call problem.††"

I guess there are actually other places with 'stupid people'... who'd a thunk it!

How about a reward for anyone who turns in someone who makes a crank 911 call?
