And now we know who Cofresi was named after..... I learned something new today.

As far as the cannons, when we saw the article and photos yesterday, Mr. AE said the fisherman will probably not get a cent. He and his brother found several cannons while diving off Playa Najayo years ago, they couldn't begin to move them, but noted the location. The brother told someone, who told someone, etc., and the next time they went diving all the cannons were gone. He's pretty certain the government removed them. Several years after that, the brother and a diving buddy found an old chest, and same thing happened. That buddy DID find one gold coin once while diving, which he kept and later sold.

Cofresi is legendary in Puerto Rican Pirate Lore. There's a statue of his person in Western coast town Cabo Rojo (Red Cape).

Still, I'll want to go diving and check things out when installing the water plant for Carnival there.
