(a) If I am walking on Duarte towards the ocean, am I walking north or south?
(b) Ditto: Am I walking towards or away from Miami?
(c) If I'm walking on Malecon towards Lincoln, am I walking east or west?
I THINK west, towards Haiti and California, east being towards, SDQ, Puerta Plata, and England--not sure.

Just trying to get my bearings, cough, cough.

Santo Domingo is south coast, Puerto Plata is north coast

Duh! Could have fooled me! So if I fly to Miami from Puerto Plata, it's a shorter flight than from SDQ? And maybe costs less? (The latter: Bet it doesn't!)

Shorter flight to POP, and more expensive. Cheapest flights are to Punta Cana usually.....

Are there flights from POP to Miami? Nothing changes the fact that Puerto Plata is the north coast of the Island

I love to hang out on Google Maps to figure out what's where.

My friend Mikey Five Oh from Boston ought to. He can get lost walking in a straight line.

You are walking NORTH and TOWARDS Miami (Sligthly - 45 deg. angle).

The Caribbean Sea is South of SD, not the Atlantic Ocean.

The major expense in flying an airliner is the fuel used in taking off and landing. The distance depends on the route taken, and by looking out the window, I have identified at least two between MIA and SDQ. Both fly over the Bahamas: one route flies south over the the Turks & Caicos, then S over the DR to SDQ, while another turns south at Great Inagua in the Bahamas, through the straits between Cuba and Hispaniola, and then turns left over the southern peninsula of Haiti and along the SW coast of the DR to SDQ. There may be other routes as well. I assume that the pilot uses the route that will have the fewest problems with weather and other air traffic.

Distance is only loosely related to the price of the ticket, I have found.

If he is walking on Duarte towards the "ocean" then he is walking south towards the carribbean sea.

It looks like he is confused. He is calling the carribbean sea "ocean"

Lothario is correct based on the OP saying ocean.

You cannot see the Atlantic Ocean from SD. See the map that Lothario posted.

The OP was referring to "The Sea", NOT the Atlantic Ocean, so YOU are wrong!

Get your bearings with the sun.

... am I walking north or south?... am I walking east or west?

OMG, where have all those boy/girl scout skills gone?? :cross-eye

Look at the sun, take a watch, or a pencil and a piece of paper (to cast a shadow).... :classic:
