So yesterday I went to the place that that the US embassy advised me to go to report being robbed by policia national. All the information on the Embassy website was wrong. I was directed to go to the main policia national office. Once there I was shuffled from person-to-person, basically no one wanted to deal with the situation.

Finally after sitting in the corner for 20 minutes and no one paying attention to me ( I was instructed to sit down and wait) I saw a local business owner that I've known for over a year. I told him that I was robbed by two policemen and he called over someone and told them my story I was finally taken into the building. There I told my story to a woman who asked me some questions which I answered without problem. She asked if I could ID the people and I said definitely. I spent 3 hours there only for them to tell me to come back the next day to ID the guys.

TODAY, I show up at 7:50am. As I am walking into the building, the main police officer who took my money, knife, and was slapping me and threatening to cut my hair is getting his shoes shined. I tuck my head and walk towards the front door. He sees me and runs over and pushes me against the wall and begins threatening me and calling me an evil haitian. I tell him, " No me toques." many times and look around for the many police who are standing around watching to do something. The guy continues yelling and backing me repeated into the wall and threatening to beat me. Finally someone intervened and pulled him back. He continued to threaten me (yelling very loudly in the quiet morning) and call me an "Diablo Haitiano".

Finally the woman I was talking to the previous day comes out and sees me standing there. I tell her that this is why I didn't want to come back and do the face-to-face identification. I am escorted back into her office for 4.5 hours. They paraded multiple ranking policemen into the office to say that I should fear the police and that they are there to protect me. Like I said, I spent 4.5 hours in that office(I wasn't allowed to leave) and all they did was write down my statement. I kept asking if I could leave and they kept telling me no that they were still investigating. All-this-time, I see the two policemen who assaulted and robbed me walking the halls, laughing, working, and looking into the office at me.

I think that they were hiding me from the press that was all around. When one asked me why I was there, the lady policeman told him not to ask me. At first I thought they were really trying to help me, but after 4 hours it was clear nothing was going to happen. They asked me multiple times if i got my money and knife back would I be okay with that. I told them I just don't want anymore problems, but yes I would like my things returned.

THE RESULT:
The 2 policemen are currently still working in uniform with all police equipment, though they had their pistols taken from them. For how long I don't know. In all I wasted 7.5 hours (literally) sitting in an office while nothing happened.

They kept telling me that they were here to protect me and I shouldn't be afraid, but when I report that I was robbed, identify the people who did it, the people get caught in lies and ultimately admit it and present the option of returning my things....AND STILL NOTHING HAPPENS to them... Yea, I feel real safe. If I hadn't so my friend the local INFLUENTIAL business owner at the police station they wouldn't have even done the little that they did.

I will definitely be reporting this to the local press and someone at the Embassy. Another example of this country biting the hand that feeds them.

Wow. So, did you get your wallet and knife back? Was there ID in the wallet with your DR address on it?

I can't argue with your assessment of this whole episode. I wouldn't be surprised if they gave them back their firearms as soon as you left.

My husband and his brother [who is here from DR visiting] both said you should report this to the National Police Headquarters in Santo Domingo. Leopoldo Navarro & 27 de Febrero, near where the US Embassy used to be. That's the only way there will be a "real" investigation, that they WILL investigate. The POP police protect their own, the main office will follow up on this. They say at that building there are always Press present, and the story will be told through them.

Report the entire episode to the US embassy, tell them that you feel threatened and insist they take action.

Secondly go to the Nacional Police Headquartes and report the case there.

Be as specific as possible re names.

Sounds like the US Embassy was of great help as well. They are there to protect you also! Best just to understand the lawless society in which you now live.

I will say you have a set of brass ones. I would now move to another area, lay low and cut my hair.

Looking for justice in the DR is like looking for a virgin in a whorehouse. I would make a stink if you find a reporter who would listen but I would make plans to move, unless you are planning a Charles Bronson.

Its the third world. It happens and nobody gives a snot.

The best revenge is living well.

As I understand, the OP is a black man with long hair/dreads, he was driving a pasola and was profiled by dumb policias as a Haitian voodoo pot addict or something like that. But he is a US citizen, right?

Is the above statement is correct, just go to reporters, and ask them to write an article about your person and what happened to you, something like Black US Citizens can't be safe in DR because they are profiled as Haitians and robbed by Racist Dominican Police. They love to make news like that. In a couple of days after it's published, the chief of the Police will come to your home to bring your wallet back and apologize.

I have contact info for reporters that work for SIN TV. I know fitting name but they did my story when I called Alicia Ortega's office at SIN. Alicia (cuban heritage) is from the US and works here now. Attention needs to be brought to this situation. The reporter and camera man that came to my house was Gregorio and Edwin and I will PM you the contact information for her office and their personal cell phones. Press on brother, it helps everyone in the long run!

And, Robert, why part 1 of this thread was closed?

I mean - the REAL reason.

Who you are trying to protect?

Robert is protecting no one. Threads get closed here all the time. Often to prevent them from going far off topic.

If people go to far off topic, delete their post... but to delete the whole thread.

This man has endured an ordeal and there is no public outcry from the members of dr1.com. If you are a foreigner you will be targeted by police and criminals i.e you have no rights in RD? If you are black and resemble a Haitians you are even worse off?
A deafening hush has fallen over the membership. Incidents like this make all foreigners unsafe and to let it slide shows the DR authorities we are nothings but a bunch of losers, so why not get targeted.
The place becomes more unsafe by the day next it won't be someone who will get off so easy.

It is a tragedy what has happened to this guy and the response from the police is unacceptable. I hope that the PN here in Jarabacoa never act like that. The few that I've had interaction from have been polite, so far.

I think if I was in your situation, I would leave the country ASAP. You go to the police for help but knowing the history of the Policia Nacional after many years in the country I would NOT TRUST anyone in that establishment for help. It could be highly likely that these same two officers will now attempt to target you for something, anything to tarnish your reputation and story. There have been numerous reports of P.N. officers involved in murders, coercion and nothing EVER happens to them. For your safety I would leave. The P.N. are not going to protect you.
