BBC News - Vatican tribunal convicts former envoy of sex abuse

A tribunal in the Vatican has convicted the former papal envoy to the Dominican Republic of sex abuse and stripped him of the priesthood.

Jozef Wesolowski, who is originally from Poland, was recalled by the Church last year amid claims that he had abused boys in Santo Domingo.

Wesolowski is the highest-ranking Vatican official to have been investigated for sex abuse.

Pope Francis has urged the Church to root out and punish abuse by priests.

Wesolowski had served as envoy to the Dominican Republic for five years. He was ordained as a priest and bishop by his compatriot, Pope John Paul II.

He has two months to appeal against the sentence. As a citizen of the Vatican, he also faces criminal charges in the city state, which could lead to a prison sentence.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic have also opened an investigation into Wesolowski, but have not charged him.

Pope Francis last year strengthened the Vatican's laws against child abuse. He has pledged a crackdown on clerics and employees of the Church who exploit minors, comparing their actions to a "satanic mass".

you need to remember that it was not a penal process. stripping of the priesthood is the highest internal penalty, so to speak.

He could end up behind bars too:

I wonder if the Vatican even has a prison. I know they have a jail.
Perhaps they send their prisoners to Italy.

The Vatican has no prison system, apart from a few detention cells for pre-trial detention.[8] People convicted of committing crimes in the Vatican serve terms in Italian prisons (Polizia Penitenziaria), with costs covered by the Vatican.[9]

As he did not commit his crimes in the Vatican, maybe he should be sent to a Dominican prison.

Just when I was enjoying Orange is the New Black, and thought that a similar series about the Vatican Prison might make for an interesting series.

One ward for each of the Seven Deadly Sins, for example.

This organisation doesn't have to hand him over to the cops because of what?

Did I miss something here?
Is anyone really suggesting that he only has to face the church (and their various nominated ghosts)?

Is this non-governmental organisation, answerable to no-one but themselves, the ones that have investigated this most disgusting of crimes?

Where was the law? Not now he has been busted by the catholics, but why do this organisation think that they are a higher authority than the judiciary?
How on earth do the judiciary let them?

This whole concordat abuse of American countries sucks like an alter-boy in the vestry!

Naming a guy nuncio and sending off to las indias is an ancient Spanish trick.

The Church has done this for years.

In Mexico City when someone gets a job outside of "El De Efe" (Mexico City), the chilangos (Mexico Citians) tell him "Ahora vas a saber lo que es amar de Dios en tierra de indios." and when you realize that leaving the big city might not have been such a smooth move, you say "Vamos de Guatemala en Guatepeor".

Strangely, in Mexico City no one refers to it as Mexico City. It is la capital or most likely El De Efe or El Distrito. Just as in the capital of the US, hicks call it Washington. To the locals, it is "The District" or "De Cee".

It is a total disgrace that this man was whisked away by the church and did not face criminal charges in a court like anyone else living here who commits crimes against children ,The cardinal is too old and senile to hold his position and the RC church which has about 3% of its flock in church every sunday deserves to die here ,,,as it is quickly doing

The Vatican Trick

They had been very quiet about this earlier on...

However, the Cardinal was cunning enough to "tip off" the Vatican, at a time when the Dominican public had already demanded action from the Dominican government. ;)

The Vatican then quickly ordered the black sheep to appear before the Papal Court in order to protect him from wordly justice...

So far, the trick has worked. :classic:

Sin Wash

The wording
"Measures will be taken so he is in a precise restricted location, without any freedom of movement, since he has been found guilty of a serious crime and is awaiting further legal action,? said the Vatican?s chief spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi."
suggests that the pedophile was not thrown in a dungeon and may even be still bathed regularly by novices in an attempt to washed him from his sins... :cheeky:

Remember:
A bishop from the Dominican Republic was recently reported to say that he was shocked to see Wesolowski walking freely on the streets of central Rome.

A reminder to stay on topic, in this case only about the nuncio. Don't get into religious discussions.
