Okay, as I understand it, "amargue" was the original name for what we know as bachata. Also, we know that the literal translation of amargue is bitter; hence, bachata is music that describes the bittersweet of love and romance. As I stated in the Romeo thread, it's similar to blues (which similar to bachata too morphed in name to "rythym and blues") in that it expressed deep feelings of sadness (bitterness).

I ask for your help in bringing some light to this mysterious genre. Please, all that have real perspective express yourselves.

Most DR1 readers "discovered" bachata through Aventura and even think Romeo invented it.

Amargue. Pronounced a-mar-ge (hard g). I don't think soft G exists in Spanish. H sound G, yes. Feel free to correct me.

Luis Segura has definitely had a long running career. I love his tunes, but I don't think I would call him 'The Father' of bachata. There were a number of people that contributed a lot to what it is today.

Eladio Romero Santos, Leonardo Paniagua, Jose Manuel Calderon (He was the first one to record a Bachata song...a lot of people would consider him as the father of Bachata), Aridia Ventura, Ramon Cordero, Marino Perez, Edilio Paredes, and Rafael Encarnacion are some that come to mind. These were the trailblazers of Bachata as a genre.

Edilio Paredes is probably one of the best (if not the best) bachata guitar players of all time.

Juan Luis Guerra (Bachata Rosa) can be credited for giving the genre some acceptance into all levels of society (If it's good enough for JLG a classically trained musician then it must be good enough for everyone).

More about Edilio. The guy plays multiple instruments like the accordion for instance. He's one of those gifted musicians.

Bachata was considered fit only for brothels until about 20 years ago when the new version came along with songs of impossible love. I'm a big fan of early Raulin Rodiguez and more recent Antony Santos. Antohny Santos brought Bachata to the radio with his song, "Voy P'alla" which was originally broadcast with female singers. Raulin got his start playing guitar for the Santos band and then made it big with songs like Nereyda and Morena yo soy tu Marido. I have no real interest in today's bachata which has strayed from its country roots..

That is exactly what I'm talking about. Thank you.

Thanks again for sharing all. And for those that insist on denigrating Dominican music and their musicians I say learn some Spanish and listen to the lyrics, and/or pick up an instrument and try and play along.

Now we're talking! "Nereyda" is MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE and "Voy P'all?" IS A CLASSIC! Today's bachata is bubble gum!

Well said, PeterInBrat.

Edilio is a GOD! Agree on everything you said!

And here is an older style of Bachata. Anytime they're singing about food, there's a sexual implication. Songs like this were often banned from the radio:

My husband is of the generation who prefers merengue, in 'his day' bachata was just for the lower classes. Our son prefers bachata, and performs it "on the side" of his career/day job. He's the singer in this video:
