Ports, airports on high alert for Ebola

Santo Domingo.- Public Health minister Freddy Hidalgo on Wednesday announced reinforced surveillance at ports and airports to prevent the Ebola virus from entering the country.

He said everything international agreements and protocols stipulate against the disease will be implemented, and affirmed that the population will be oriented about Ebola.

Hidalgo spoke at the Public Works Club in a meeting with health sector NGOs, who requested their permanent integration in prevention, as the only way to control dengue and chikungunya outbreaks.

One of your links in English.............

"We have been taking action," said the minister,

SANTO DOMINGO. The Minister of Public Health, Freddy Hidalgo, said this morning that the team is on epidemiological alert to detect if the Ebola virus entering the country, and already at ports and airports "are watching."

"I have been taking measures," the official said before leading a meeting of national integration with non-profit associations to "Plan preparation and response to outbreaks of dengue and chikungunya fever."

In that sense, Hidalgo said the Ministry of Public Health follows a working protocol attached to international health regulations to detect the new virus in the country.

"And these standards are what we have just been working with computers that are regulated by the National Bureau of Epidemiology, primarily through provincial health directorates and through the e-health areas," he added.

The health minister urged people to be calm, and aware that the Ministry of Health operates under international health guidelines.

He also said that with the aim of guiding the public, the health portfolio below provide details on Ebola.

Government Clown

So, the health minister says, that the country is prepared and in vigilance for ebola... :tired:

Well, the DR health system cannot cope with dengue, chikungunya, leptospirosis, etc.
So, this is just another government clown lying to the people.

This is very silly. There are no direct flights from the DR to West Africa where the outbreaks are. The main airlines which fly there internationally are halting their flights. The Airlines That Have Halted Flights to West Africa Over Ebola Concerns

Plus, Ebola, while often fatal, is NOT an airborne virus, although it can be transmitted by sweat.

The DR has so many diseases that it has not been able to control.. we have now, in addition to the four types of dengue,
chikunguna,
malaria,
typhoid (shots are recommended for travelers out of resorts)
HIV (highest in the Caribbean),
cholera,
leptosporosis,
Hepitisis A and B
Rabies
Bacterial Menengitis
CDC - Schistosomiasis
Giardia Lamblia

So, really, it is GOOD to know that the health officials are on the WATCH for a Virus which is thousands of miles away.

They might be better off focusing on their own backyard, eh?

Ofcourse this announcement is nothing more than someone (Hidalgo) wanting to feel important.

human rabies is rare in DR. no deaths this year and one death last year. the government is doing a great job with massive vaccinations of animals (gratis).

On this I agree with you one hundred percent.:ermm: If someone were to be infected
with ebola, they probably will say the person died of CHIKV or dengue.:tired:

They really aren't sure if the deaths are either dengue or CHIKV. They are just guessing
without testing the people.

Unlikely. Chicky presents like a bad case of the flu. Ebola is about the nastiest form of hemorrhagic fever known, and the symptoms are ghastly.

The good news is, Ebola doesn't transfer easily from person to person, so the "burn out" rate is pretty high - if you can isolate folks.

Many of the african nations involved have poor water treatment facilities (or a communal well), and less than ideal sanitation in the countryside clinics.

Frankly, I wouldn't worry too much.

Yes, of course, they would. They are known as liars. :ermm:

Even only one revealed case of Ebola would be the end to tourism for months to come.

The 90% fatal rate of this disease scares people out of their wits, and they will not care about the path of infection.

Thank god for that. I'm glad dv8 mentioned this. There are no neutered dogs in Buen Hombre. They are constantly doing their 'thing' everywhere in town. So there is always a new batch of puppies that need to be vaccinated for rabies. One woman, along with 2 helpers, walks around the whole town every 4-5 months giving shots to the new crop of dogs. This has been going on for several years. I didn't expect much in the way of government services here and this was a pleasant surprise.

Meanwhile, a million people a year die from Malaria.. Ebola is bad, but mostly from local practices and a fear of taking the sick to hospitals. It's not an easy disease to get, at least not with the strains that have emerged so far. See also, Cholera which is far easier than Ebola to get and kills many more people each year.

Oh boy, it looks like it could be inevitable in the DR. Let's hope they can begin
to take drastic measures, whatever that may be. I do not see how that can be
accomplished.:ermm:

Lawmaker urges more control against Ebola

Santo Domingo.- Deputy Vinicio Castillo on Thursday asked Public Health minister Freddy Hidalgo to include the border with Haiti among its measures to keep the Ebola virus out of the country, citing previous epidemics that arrived from there.

The minority FNP party lawmaker warned Haiti’s direct weekly flights to the African continent, source of the deadly disease, makes it necessary to include the border in the control measures, in addition to ports and airports.

He said both the chikungunya and cholera viruses that have hit the country in recent months come from Africa, and in the latter’s case, entered the Dominican Republic from Haiti.

He said he doesn’t want to create alarm, but to urge the authorities to adopt measures along the border and protect the Dominican population.

"I believe and there’s the precedent of the cholera which was in America or in the Caribbean came precisely through members of Minustah (UN peacekeepers) who brought it from Africa," Castillo said.

He said chikungunya also came via Martinique aboard direct contacts with flights to Africa, for which special preventive measures had to be taken on the border, “especially taking into account the number of flights."

Ebola has a long incubation period. An infected person could easily return to New York then fly down to the DR. Thank God we have nothing to worry about as someone woke up the health Minister and he is on high alert. Nothing like a Dominican politician to instill complete confidence. Just look at the way the government handled the Chickungunya outbreak. Did nothing which is absolutely par for the course.

During the primary outbreak of CHIKV in June to July, the malls seemed like nothing had changed. People walking around and as though there really wasn't a problem. EBOV would be an entirely different matter altogether or even worse a real airborne influenza like H1N1. Malls would resemble ghost towns in short order.
