Any way around selling to someone that will not send payment?

We have an office in Santiago, and sometimes we tend to sell some items that are left-over from bigger orders. Our customer-base is mainly Santiago, but every now and then, someone from outside of Santiago calls wanting to purchase something.

In that case, we offer them delivery to their city once we receive payment. Unfortunately, the few that do call have the concern that they will not receive the item after paying for it.

Is there any way around that?

Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is to ask other customers who have received packages if you can use their names and give their numbers out as references. Or perhaps call Caribe Tours and see if they have any sort of COD Cash on delivery system?

Not too many people would remain in business, especially here, if they shipped without payment first.

Escrow.....not sure how or where....a "trusted" intermediary holds the funds. Often times in the US an attorney will hold funds in a real estate deal.

Might be a service that Banco Popular, or one of the other banks might consider....if the demand were there.

Dominicans and gringos who have lived here a while have learned that you NEVER pay upfront. Its so ingrained that whenever someone ask for payment before delivery its laughable. Just not done here more than once.

Escrow.com

a suggestion: post the goods as a private listing on Ebay, and get the buyer pay via PayPal.
That way, both of you should be protected.

Not true. What about the 1,000's of Dominicans and Gringos that use EPS, CPS etc to buy items via Amazon, Sears, Macy's and eBay? These are all upfront payments.

15+ yrs with DR1 and we have processed 100's of upfront payments from clients and also paid out plenty of upfront payments for goods and services. It's all about trust, plain and simple.

But...

When you're talking about some self employed 1 man band that is going to paint your house, build a wall, fix the cooker or hang a door, that's a different story.
