The Dominican Republic men’s basketball team has a chance of playing in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016. With the US win of the FIBA World Championship on Sunday, 14 September 2014, Team USA advanced directly to the Olympics. Given that another leading team from the Americas, Brazil, has qualified for the Olympics because it is hosting the event, two slots are available for other teams. The DR now needs to compete with Argentina, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela and Uruguay for one of the two available slots.

In the recently ended FIBA World Championship, the Dominican Republic national basketball team finished in 13th position of 24 teams.

NBC sports discusses more on DR's possibility of getting into the Rio Olympics basketball tournament and explains the DR has a good chance:

"The Dominican Republic and Mexico were eliminated in the round of 16 at the FIBA World Cup.

The Dominican Republic has never qualified for the Olympics, but it came oh-so close for 2012, finishing third at the 2011 FIBA Americas and fourth at the last-chance 2012 qualifying tournament. One spot higher in either would have earned a trip to London. The Dominican Republic team could include NBA All-Star Al Horford and former University of Louisville players Francisco Garcia and Edgar Sosa."
