From today's Sosua News:

In a meeting for the press, the organizing committee led by Mayor Ilana Neumann announced the program for the Multicultural Festival (formerly Gastronomic festival). The festival takes place on Friday 26, Saturday 27 and Sunday, September 28th at the Parque des Flores. This park is located next to the Sos?a Bay Casino at the beginning of the main street Pedro Clisante. It is now for the fourth year that this festival takes place.

The event has become, in the course of these four years, a broad multicultural event. In addition to the many restaurants offering their specialties in stands, numerous cultural events will take place. There are on-stage performances of ballet, dance, folklore groups and music bands. The ballet performances are given by the Emely Watson School of Dance and the Ministry of Tourism. 'Pedrito Reynoso and his band' perform folk music. The sing and dance groups from Casa de Arte Sos?a will also be present on the stage. Furthermore, there are booths where students of various creative courses will showcase their products. There is also a horse trainer demonstration.

The event closes on Sunday evening with the internationally renowned and famous salsa band Yiyo Sarante.

Just forget about the ones in Sosua and Puerto Plata and come to the one at El Choco.

Simple.

Mike that is funny.

Indeed.

Dominicans primarily will enjoy the Merengue festival and a mixture of people will attend the Sosua festival. As a musician listening to music with only two chords repeating endlessly (merengue) is maddening. Have that music played by bands with only guitars and percussion and it causes insanity.

I doubt very many Dominicans will be at El Choco since the music will primarily be in English and the food served won't be Dominican style.

Another way of saying that is the El Choco will be unique and the other two festivals have commonality with something that happens frequently.

I do agree that the timing is very unfortunate.

I thought I was the only one who can't stand merengue......
Thank goodness there are two of us.

The Sosua event has some entertainment for children and families. There is face painting during the day, a performance by the dance groups of Emily Watson, and other family oriented entertainment. All is free. Only the food costs money. I would tend to believe that the El Choco event, which also sounds appealing, is geared to adults only.

Many of you here on Dr1 are not necessarily interested in family events. But although they may not be represented here on dr1, there ARE many families on the North Coast of the DR. I would imagine most families are busy (as I was when my kids were growing up) and don't have the opportunity to log onto dr1 regularly.

My point is that perhaps each event will attract a different sector of the market. And isn't that wonderful! No matter whether you are here for adult enjoyment or for family entertainment with kids, there is something available in the Sosua area.

As always Lindsey has put this perfectly... lots of choices for everyone. Families here have little choices from what I see and this is a great event for that reason alone. I enjoyed it the first year when it was more sample type service and you could try a lot of different offerings for a reasonable price. Puerto Plata... merengue, not for my taste. Having a musician in the family and enjoying the offering of live performances by many artists, El Choco, will be our choice this year. I am glad the Sosua event has continued and no doubt will attend it again. Thank you Lindsey for being such a well spoken person who never feels the need to make this an either or issue!!!
