There's a fantastic hike that many people do not know about. It involves driving about 2 miles outside of the town of Las Galeras, parking your car or motorcycle, and then walking with a "guide" over a mountain plateau/ridge and then going down a 100ft. cliff, through a gorge, and onto the beach of one of the remotest beaches on the island: Playa Fronton.
This part of the hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and involves some climbing in order to get onto a table-top ridge. From there, it is a straight trek across a plateau until you reach the top of a gorge which funnels down onto the beach of Playa Fronton. The downhill descent onto the beach involves getting down on all fours and slowly descending down the gorge. It's not very difficult, and i just ddid with both an 8yr old and a 10yr old.
Once you are down on Playa Fronton beach, you can either be picked up by boat, or you can head south along the beach a trail--for about 2 miles in order to reach Boca de Diablo. There you will need someone (i arranged for three motoconchos to come and get us) to pick you up and take you back into the town of Las Galeras.
The second part of the hike--from Playa Fronton to Boca de Diablo only takes about 1 hour. The total hike only takes 2.5 to 3 hours, but involves some climbing and descending into the heart of darkness. You're in complete jungle, under a huge canopy of towering trees, vines, foliage, and wild flowers that thankfully block out the sun. Only on a few occasions are you actually exposed to the sun.
I've climbed Pico Duarte a couple times here, been down the Haitiain-Dominican border, been up and over most of the mountains that connect the north coast to the south coast (I've posted the videos on Youtube) but this hike is truly amazing. I highly recommend it.
