Terrible news. I think I read somewhere that the DR is one of the most dangerous places for vehicular travel.

i think the cause of losing control is more likely to be high speed.

So sad... most likely going to the airport form La Romana, to travel back home.
It is uncertain whether the SUV crossed just a lane in its travel direction, or whether it crossed the median. The driver and husband were probably lucky (and alive thanks to that) that the accident happened close to the toll plaza, so rescue services were able to be on scene in just couple of minutes (they are stationed at all toll plazas).

And most of the impact of the white van of (operator name excluded, you can see it in the pictures) is in the back, which would indicate this was not a head-on collision, but most likely a side collision (back of cream SUV impacting the white van). It looks like they were traveling in the same direction and the SUV slid to the side lane.

Within minutes?

... rescue services were able to be on scene in just couple of minutes (they are stationed at all toll plazas).

The latter does not imply the first.
I could not see any rescue personel at the scene, just a man with a blue 'security' jacket....
