More tax increases on the way
The effects of the 2012 tax reform are still being felt as they are phased in. Come January 2015, there will be a 2% increase in the sales tax (ITBIS) on sugar, coffee, yoghurt, chocolate, margarine and oil, from 11% to 13%. These products have all been subject to a gradual increasing scale from 8% in 2013 and will eventually reach 16% in 2016.
In addition, the tax on alcohol will also increase with wine going up to RD$540.10 per liter from RD$514.10 and vodka, rum and whisky going from RD$457.30 to RD$498.40.
In addition there will be another 10% tax over and above ITBIS on alcohol.
The tax on a packet of 20 cigarettes, which currently pays RD$45 in tax, will increase to RD$50.

Just out of curiosity, how much is a liter of Brugal and a bag of Santo Domingo coffee in the US?

That can't be right. That's RD$405 per 750ml bottle of wine. I can buy a bottle for less than that. They're selling wine at a loss?

These increases were announced more than a year ago ,,there was a staggered increase in various products but by and large all fresh food and water remains untaxed

this is a tax per cada litro de alcohol absoluto. wine does not contain 100% of alcohol. stronger alcohols will pay higher taxes, weaker alcohols will pay lower tax. hence the invasion of **** known as presidente light: lower alcohol content = lower tax.

The heading of this thread is a total and complete lie ..nearly all basic foods are free of ITBIS ,this includes nearly all fresh agricultural food produced in the DR ,vegetables, fruit, bread, milk and water . The least rich in this country probably never pay a cent in ITBIS and can still have a healthy diet .

not so Moderator because all basic agricultural foodstuffs produced in the DR are exempt ..that means meat ,vegetables, fruit .milk and natural water All processed food is taxed because ITBIS is a vaalue added tax VAT
