The first major operative for AAASosua at HQ since May went really well. AAASosua has been restructuring since May to focus on spay/neuter which is the most effective and humane way to help control the animal population on the North Coast.
To date AAASosua has spayed/neutered nearly 600 animals and has two further major operatives planned for 2014.

Two vets from Germany, Veterinarian Dagmar Stech who was here with AAAS earlier this year, and in 2013 and 2012, and Veterinarian Birthe Deichmann from near Hamburg, worked throughout the week. Both had sponsorship from Creole Dogs ( Verein zur Hilfe und F?rderung des kreolischen Hundes e.V. ) who support many of the animal welfare groups in the Dominican Republic.

Carolyn, who had come from Canada, brought a huge amount of donated items from Canada for AAAS and to volunteer, helping out in recovery. Carolyn, not only worked every day, but she took a dog home to Canada ....hopefully for herself and transported another for another rescue group. Many thanks Carolyn.

Carl Hackman , a long term supporter of AAASosua went above and beyond being a volunteer. He recently gained the Veterinary Assistant certificate at Ashworth College in Georgia, USA so his volunteer work with animals will be even more valuable to the AAASosua.!

AAASosua tries to encourage additional training and qualification. A number of people have expressed interest in furthering their skills with the help of practical experience at AAAS
Steph Staples, a qualified Vet Tech worked with Dagmar in the later part of the week. She is a great volunteer and thank you for making donations to AAASosua.

Long term volunteers Janet, Vera, Carl, Elaine, Mel, Francine,Tatjana and Marina were there and thanks to their efforts this was a successful operative.
The Vets found a baby bird in the road after the huge rain storm on Monday and brought it in to AAAS to recover. Happily when it was returned to the area where it was found, and it flew off. As it was not seen again it is hoped it found its way back to the nest!

The cat population seems to be exploding and more and more cats are being brought in. The three here took a dim view of all the proceedings! Some were more excited and wondered what was going on!

Many donations were received during the week long operative.

On the first day of operatives Janet Williams ( President of Sosua Kids) provided a lunch for all volunteers. Eva took the time to round up two Sosua street dogs for surgery and brought snacks to keep everyone going. Playa Laguana hotel provided a delicious German meal complete with Spatzel and dessert. AAAS provided a major surgery for one of their many dogs. Clayton Gush who now lives in Perla Marina has been inundated with stray animals being abandon at his house. We sterilized and vaccinated all these and I am sure he would love to find other homes for them. He has many young cats that are now ready to rehome. He brought us some really nice collars and delicious snacks for our efforts. Thank you for your donations.

Many surgeries were on large reproducing females. Each surgery needed the best of all the core volunteers skills/abilities and time to assure each animal received the care it needed from start to finish. Everybody worked long days but we know that how we do things truly makes a difference to every animal presented to AAASosua for surgery and care. Drs. Dagmar and Birte know the importance of making sure every animal on their surgical table gets the best of what they do. All our volunteers do a great job. Many of our volunteers have other obligations in their lives but put these operatives first.

A BIG Thank you to you all!
