I spoke to a grade school teacher who said , yes she remembered something about periods and capital letters to form sentences, but didn't remember it and saw no reason to confuse her students with it.

blah blah blah. licentia poetica. i am not here in a capacity of a school teacher.

That is because in Spanish it does not rhyme as in English:

"In fourteen hundred and ninety two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue."

~ En mil novecientos cuarenta y dos,
Col?n naveg? por el oc?ano azul.

Ya ves? No rima.

I thought I'd test a couple of Dominican aircraft mechanics that I know. I asked them some basic physics questions:

How many kilos does a litre of water weigh? He said 20 pounds!

At what temperature Celsius does water boil? He said around 30 (I would have given him credit if he told me at what altitude water boils at 30 degrees!)

If you double the length of a lever, what happens to the amount of force you need to apply? He said double the force.

Conclusion?

Don't ride on Dominican maintained planes!

Not really, the syllable that rhymes with do' (dos) much be agudo (accented on the final syllable).
The rules of English and Polish poetry do not apply.

The usual ditty goes like this:

Por Castillo y por Le?n,
Nuevo Mundo hall? Col?n.

But alas, it does not mention the date.

Un a?o antes del noventa y tres,
El almirante vino a esta isla, ?ya ves?

There is an ancient belief that mentioning Col?n by name is mala suerte.
That is why he is referred to more often as ?El Almirante?.

and they want more money? how about more brains?

It could have been worse, it could have been 4 of 6, or even worse 2 of 3.

Dominicans may not have the benefit of the best education, but they have more class than your typical gringo.

Mind you this is on the actual ceremonia of Colombus day!

I would wage that if you asked any of them what is celebrated on the 5th of December in June, very few of them would have a clue

Btw being a salsero does help, below are some lyrics from Los Van Van

En mil cuatrocientos llego Colon
Y descubrio esta hermosa isla
Donde habitaba la raza india
La que con el tiempo extermino

For those of us who have children in the school system this is a major concern. The system here is a joke. I like to surprise my daughter at school and a couple of times when I have showed up her teacher is always in her cell phone I would guess on Facebook. I took her out of that school and at the new school it's way different. Parents need to check that the teachers are doing their job. Some parents see school as their own personal "Free time"
