interesting article here: Productores SJM opuestos a multas por uso haitianos -
even the dominicans recognize that without haitian work force there would be no one to do the job.

Haitians vs. Dominican Workers

... without haitian work force there would be no one to do the job.

In agriculture and construction, too.
Most Haitians are hard working, honest and skilled, simply the better option IMO.

Some of these Jobs that Haitians are doing today, were not considered Haitian Jobs just a couple of decades ago, and were carried out by Dominicans.
I doubt there will be a catastrophe. Of course, the food producer says that because he's comfy paying his workers little, and he doesn?t want THAT to change. And of course you gringos agree, because you?re usually biased towards Haitians, plus, most of you haven't lived in the DR enough to have seen the changes, so you have a one sided view.Look how some of you talk about "Jobs Dominicans won?t do". Someone who has lived here long enough, or who is knowlegeable of the real DR, knows that this is not actually accurate.

Things might change, but people will adapt like they always have, and there will be people who will do these Jobs.
This could actually be a good thing, this might force employees to pay more, making certain Jobs more desirable.

WE would pay for these higher salaries if they pay more they will increase their prices.

To how many more increases can the average Dominican earner adapt? Platano now 13 DOP, then 30 DOP? :(

I agree with you. This is aimed at forcing the employers to regularize the status of illegals
in their businesses. They want to continue to pay them miserable wages. They fully are aware
that once these illegals become legal they will demand regular wages. They want to keep
benefiting from illegals. It has absolutely nothing to do with them recognizing that no one
else will do the work.

the first rule of business is to make money. paying minimum wage is a part of making a profit.

Of course it is and they do not want that changed. So they are using the excuse that there will be no one else who will do the job.

unfortunately labour law in DR is not exactly business friendly and it simply does not pay off to employ people legally or pay them living wages, seeing the costs of hiring normal employees. without major changes in ley de trabajo this situation will not change.

Brace for food prices to way up.

the food prices are already high. the sellers blame the producers, the producers blame the weather and the cost of transport. transportistas blame the government and say they will not lower prices unless canasta basica goes down. vicious circle.

For 19 years we have employed Dominicans and Haitians.
First Dominicans then we switched to Haitians.
All receive(d) the same pay.

The Haitians say 'gracias' when they receive their pay. They bring us fruits that we did not know they grew on the finca. They bring us the hens' eggs. They do not syphon diesel from our tanks. They do not steal chicks and carry them off under their 'gorras'. They arrive punctually and do not leave early. I have never found them sleeping during work hours. They do not lie. The finca has never been that 'limpio' since they came. We like them.
We pay the money they have to pay to corrupt Dominican officials at the border (when they go on a home leave).

Let me rephrase that: Those Dominican owners know that Dominicans will not work for miserable or below minimum wages.

Exactly. So now they are forcing them to whether they like it or not.

Now that they will be fined for hiring illegals, they will have a choice to make. Regularize their status in which case they will demand regular wages just as Dominicans will demand the same.
