It really amazes me how many people drown here!! Very sad!

It is sad. I think a lot of it is the law of averages. Millions of people come here every year to jump in the ocean, usually after having a cocktail or two. If one lives close to a coastline anywhere, I am sure there are quite a few mishaps that make the local press but not necessarily the national news. Those from far away would have no idea of how dangerous a dip can be.

Being from BC you can appreciate very few people drown there because most have learned that jumping into the Pacific at that latitude usually results in one's testicles coming to rest just behind their eyeballs.

If it wasn't for dv8 I'd have absolutely no idea how many drownings there are, or moto accidents, or shootings, or disappearances - aaah, tropical paradise....

here on the NC, a lot. after heavy rains the water is very murky, dirty and unpredictable. it's full of debris too. the rivers make new deposits in the water and wash away old ones. depending on where you swim it can be dangerous.

lol, ocean is not river or lake.

there is no rain that could change its level, even for milimetres

the wind makes it dangerous, thats all

Lets see shall we:

1. Rains comes from the sky

2. Rain goes into rivers

3. Rivers go into oceans

I believe I got this one right.

Rainwater comes from the ocean, not the other way around. Evaporation of ocean water forms clouds, which in turn cause rain. Not sure why rain water is not salty though.

its the currents at the inflow that make it dangerous

on the Great Lakes , we see swimmers drown all summer.... the closer to the river's mouth after a storm, the more die.

The torrent of inflow here is remarkable
That bridge in Rio San Juan we were asking about must have risen by 5-6M
try swimming near that and 'staying the course'

I repeat

WHOOOSH... out into the deep you go

nothing to do with water 'levels'... water activity will get you

47 year old american died while receiving medical help in centro bournigal in POP.
El Caribe ? Estadounidense muere ahogado en playa de Puerto Plata

people, please, do not swim after such bad rainfalls as we had recently.

Sad for sure.

But does the amount of rainfall in the DR have such an influence on the ocean that one should not swim when it has rained?

It is not the rainfall, but the other conditions that can cause swimming in the ocean to be unsafe.

you can see on the malecon in POP the ocean is different after heavy rains. close to any rivers it's even worse as they sometimes change position, bring in more sand or wash it away. with the rainy weather also come winds and waves.

Rip currents, a major killer of the unwary.
