If I understood the article correctly, the German was wanted for shoplifting and faces a year in prison.

I didn't realize that Interpol went after people like that, I thought it was just murderers and such.

No, it says that Oliver Reents was being sought for fleeing from a prison term of 18 months.
Shoplifting was not mentioned and would not get you such a jail term either.

"... el alem?n Oliver Reents, quien est? siendo buscado en su pa?s por hurto en un hecho por el cual podr?a cumplir una pena de un a?o y seis meses ..."

Perhaps you are correct....but using translation software does yield this;

Another detainee was the German Oliver Reents, who is wanted in his country for shoplifting a fact for which it could serve a term of one year and six months imprisonment, it was escorted by federal officials in Germany, for Las Americas International Airport. He was captured near the Avenida Juan Bautista Vicini, in the community of Boca Chica.

I cannot imagine Interpol would get involved with a shoplifting fugitive.....or that Germany would send federal officials to escort him back.....but....

Respectfully,

Up to 10 Years

....wanted in his country for shoplifting...

You are right, 'hurto' means theft.
But I do not think it was just shoplifting.
'Diebstahl' in Germany could also be 'schwerer Diebstahl' (? 243) and then a prison sentence up to 10 years is possible...

OMG a shoplifter!

We need more international Orwellian police agencies to get a handle on this!

guys were just bad guys, and they were targeted because of that. they got what they deserved

German prisons must be empty that they're going after small time thiefs.
I've met Oliver for the first time almost 3 years ago, he was a tour guide working for a company in JD besides being a part time teacher at a colegio in SD, forgot the name.
His cute little daughter goes (reckon now went) to the same colegio my daughter went and we saw each other quite often there. He was not living with the child's mother and what we had in common was that we wanted to take our daughters out of the DR.
He was very much involved in his daughter's life I can you tell you that much and that's also the only thing I know about him.
Now he won't be there anymore for her, justice served? :ermm:

So criminals get a free pass if they have cute daughters?
If you have someone who depends on you then it's your responsibility to stay out of trouble so that you can be around for them.
