The first-degree murder trial of a woman accused of drugging her husband while having an affair with a conman in the Dominican Republic began in Ottawa on Monday morning.
Nancy Lane, 55, was a registered nurse when she allegedly gave her sick 61 year old husband Arthur drugs that made his heart stop in October 2009.
Arthur Lane, who had been a leader with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, had a US$200,000 life insurance policy as well as a pension, the court heard.
Crown attorney Robert Morrison argued during opening statements that Lane's relationship with a "gigolo" and "conman" who was "half her age" in the Dominican Republic was "key to the motive" to kill her husband.
"This is a very unusual case," Morrison said. "She needed him dead."
Arthur Lane was found dead in his home in Athens, Ont., about 130 kilometers south of Ottawa. His wife was charged in August 2011 after a lengthy police investigation. The couple has four children.
Though he had ongoing health problems linked to diabetes and surgery to remove his colon, the Crown argued he had been getting better at the time of this death in 2009. The murder trial is expected to delve into his medical history.
The defense has yet to present its case in the jury trial that is expected to continue until June.
Nancy Lane is currently out on bail.
