I am curous to get some opinions on the italian restaurants in Sosua,.

I visited Osteria Toscana during my last stay and the food was rather good, however I expected more to be honest. Service and atmoshere was really good though. Reading the reviews on tripadvisor for this restaurant I guess I have to give it a new try since everyone seems to like it.

One of my favorites in the past was the restaurant across the street from Casa Valeria but it seems less crowded in January when I was there last time compared to previous times and I got a slight feeling it might go downhill.

Another one that I need to try is the really tiny restaurant next to bar flores. There is normally a large italian crowd there which is always a safe bet for italian restaurants. Does anyone have any good experiences from this restaurant?

My favorite is Mama Pasta on Dr Alejo Martinez around Calle finlandia. It's next to Coco Hotel (my fav bar).
So about a minute drive past Infinity Blue towards the casino.

Great fresh pasta and a good price!!!

I LOVE the lasagna!! I don't really care for any other Italian places in Sosua.

Milo, I think you may need to lower your expectations. In the many Italian restaurants that have come and gone over the years, none have truly excelled, some have been passably good. This is Sosua, not Roma.

While it surely isn't Rome, where I used to live in NY State we had great Italian food and incredible pizza. So it is possible to make it well far from Italy. When I can make a better chicken parm at home here in the DR with ingredients I purchase locally, it begs the question as to why a local restaurant cannot do better than me.

Where do you get your mozzarella?

Tamborista, what I believe you are implying is correct. The mozzarella here is no good. The imported Kraft or other brands are dried out. I make my own pizza at home and whether I buy cheese at Playero or Super Pola, or PriceSmart, I cannot get the right outcome with the cheese available here.

I notice Italian restaurants come and go in the Dominican Republic. I am not Italian but, I never had a bad Italian meal in the Capital, Santiago or Sosua.

There used to be, may or may not still be in business, an Italian guy that made his own mozzarella down in Sabaneta.
He sold it to a few select clients on the North Coast.

[QU Across the street from Casa Valeria was Movida. The owners from Jan.2014 Maria and Luca are at the New Garden restaurant. I usually let Maria recommend the special. Last time there had tuna steak in a broth with homemade pasta quite good, other specials I've had are rabbit, tripe. Open for dinner only with the Italian menu. They have daily specials. I do not know if they would take special orders but probably not.

Ok, mama pasta restaurant I have heard is very good actually Forgot about this one.

So the former movida owners have their place in New Garden. I will go there also. Just need to put a cage around me when I enter so not one is bothering me when I eat :)

I am all set now for my next visit.

Thanks

Interesting comments on Italian food. I find decent sauce and pasta at most restaurants. Cheese is lacking quality and price. I live many years in Napoli where simple things remain simple. As with most items if you are willing to pay you will get the best that is offered or imported. I find many not willing to pay.
