Yesterday , I received another bulletin from the Government saying how well they were doing !! I decided to walk around for a couple of hours and what I saw was a disaster , The bulletin was talking about 10 estaciones and yet there was only one. The parqeo near to the Zona Colonial Police station and Plaza Espana looks like it will be about 5 storeies high so that is something. Plaza Espana is being destroyed because it is being used as a bypass but today a film crew blocked off all exits along Calle Isobela la catolica . However all the round light steel posts dividing the roads from the footpaths are being hit by trucks and many are bending at angles. They have done, in my opinion about 20% of the necessary work , the old 15th and 16th century walls along the east and northern sides are falling into mass disrepair and nothing has been done at all from 19 de Marzo to Parque Independencia ..NOTHING .
The concentration has been on the side of the old fort and much of the work is a total waste of money ..it is almost as if the residents have to take matters into their own hands .

25 years or so ago they tore up streets in the zona colonial. Result: They did nothing but make mud puddles after 10 months they covered it all over and then repaved it with blacktop. then they gave a gov. crony the contract to lay the cinder block junk in the street. Then nothing was done until now the word got out real fast that their was millions to be had from the new project. It looks like history will repeat itself here again only this time they are doing more harm that good.I had my office in the zona for 30 years and asked all the people i know that live there what their opinion is of what is going on The following are some of the comments from residents. 1. Its a disaster , cost of living there is now increased do to no access or parking. Sorry but i cant relay to you the real sentiments they would be blocked. Such a shame to do this to the Z.C. it does not deserve such treatment. Does anyone know if UNISCO will be proud of the world herataege status now?

I think the new Coraline sidewalks are completely wrong. They always look dirty - I know they are always dirty - but I think they should have chosen something which shows the dirt less. The posts are a nightmare. They are too low to see in your mirrors, so they are very easy to hit when you are parking, result that most of them are being bent. I do agree, the whole finish is really disappointing and badly thought through.

What is a definite improvement is the work that they are doing to the facades of the buildings, especially on Calle Mercedes opposite the church and in the little square by the school. The facades are now nice and tidy and painted in some really bright colours which looks good. It's just a shame that they don't seem to have the budget to replace doors and windows.

You expected something different???????

Welcome to Paradise!

CCCCCCCCCCCCCC

Pretty much sums it up. It is what has been my experience, but on a grander scale. The most dangerous words in DR are "I want to fix something' or "I want to do something". This is where the problems begin. Want to fix the plumbing in your bathroom? Oops-now you've got a new problem-busted tiles. What to put ethernet cable in to your back rooms 'cause the concrete walls block the wifi signal? Oops-now you've got a hole in your wall to fix.

Tropical Paul ,,did you receive the latest brochure?? full of lies. I think the redoing of the facades and the strenghtening of the iron bars in the windows is really good work ,,the vandels break the doors !!.. and I actually live very close to iglesia las Mercedes and can see all the facade renovation work in Sanchez and jose reyes and 19 de marzo ..Just like you , my concern is with the work closer to calles Isobela la catolica ..it is not at all in keeping with the 16th century and the posts will soon be all hit and it would have been much better just to place some blocks delineating footpaths from roads . And nothing is done about the small sitting areas and parks , like the one outside iglesia de San Miguel or on the corner of 19 de Marzo and Mercedes..they should have been redone with non reflexive pavers ..with many more seats .

Here is a list of the new business she will have created.
Association of pushers [ They will push the stalled cars from the streets with aluminum bars.]
Brick washers association. [They will keep the cream colored bricks where the sidewalks used to be clean]
Bucket brigade [they will attempt to put out fires] [ The fire trucks can no longer access the streets]
Package carriers association [they will stand in front of the new parking lots to carry your bags]
Parking assistants they will watch your car to make sure it is not stolen [They know you parked 10 blocks from where you are going
you are]
More tourist guides they know your bus can not pass in the streets now.
Purse snachers association [they know the police must be on foot now ]
Taxi drivers to take your money they know you have no choice but use them as you have no place to park.
bring more money when you come they know parking lots will be expensive.
End result the inventors of the renovation dont care they never go farther than Blue mall from their homes in Arryo Hondo.
