I think the correct term is 'stolen' for this type of action, no?

'confiscation' implies that the perpetrators had authority to do this.

The authorities had confiscated the car from a band of criminals and assigned it to the deputy director. Or at least that's what the article says.

many years ago a wacko chic set my brothers much beloved mg td on fire....but for no reason and she was caught put in jail/hosp...and car saved...
